Good evening everyone. Quick question, I was going through the Cherry Picker guide and there was no mention of any error variety on a 1977 half dollars. I happen to have a 1977 S proof set and the half dollar which looks like an upside down S mintmark. Of note, the guide that I have was published in 2012. Picture will follow when I get home. Your thoughts, inputs , comments and infos are always appreciated. Thanks
I'm not sure. I agree kinda looks funky. But hey please can I see the penny? The s looks funky and so does the date. Looks very thick from here
Serif on the top and ball on the bottom is not an inverted Mint Mark. It appears to be a tilted punch. Just my opinion.
I agree with you on that. It looks like part of the "S" is missing, I would call that a major flaw for Poof coins. I also think that you "should" never see any "Die Deterioration" Type errors come from Proof Dies. These coins are made on a slow press unlike bussiness struck coins that get pump out at 3 per second.
I agree with Lee (19Lyds), his is the best answer, especially when he pointed out it being a tilted punch. Larry Nienaber
Good pm! Appreciate all your replies. So from what I can gather from everyone's comments,( correct me if I'm wrong): *This is not an inverted S mintmark. *It's unusual for proof coins to show die deterioration since they are struck differently compared to the business struck coins. So it means that 1977 S proof coins I received were not only poorly struck but also have a lot of irregularities not consistent with proof coin sets. Again, I want to thank you for all the infos and tips. About to start a different thread. Hope to see everyone's comments on it as well.
In my opinion, Proof coin should not show any Form of "Die Deterioration" as these dies are not exposed to the same useage as Production coin dies [business strikes]. And Proof Coin are "suposed" to be inspected before being sent out. I can't tell why you cent looks like it does, But it does look like some kind of damage.
Actually, all the coins in that set has some kind of deterioration and or imperfections. It's okay though, my kids like looking at it and besides , it's my birth year. Thanks
Its definitely looking like some form of doubling. What kind? Idk. I even started thinking it was the reflection lol but whatever it is, it's not normal that's for sure.
I know man. Did you get a chance to look at my recent post? When you do, let me know what think? Have a goodnight bro!
