1978 Lincoln Cent Coppercoins DDO-001

Tyler, noncents is very knowledgable about Lincoln cent die varieties. I also see nothing that leads me to believe this is a doubled die. 1978 is one of those years, like 1982 & 2001, where the devices are thicker than normal. I bet I have tried matching 50 or more coins to the 4 Coppercoins has listed. I finally figured it out that it will be much more noticeable. Looks like a normal 1978 to me. The R in TRUST is the best PUP in my opinion.

I take that back. May be something going on with the R. The glare makes it hard to tell though.

 

Changed my thoughts to maybe. The glare makes it hard to see the right leg of the R clearly.

Do keep in mind that when USB "scopes" are used to image coins, what you think you see and what is actually there is not always the same. Unfortunately, said tools have a bad habit of giving the impression of doubling and/or notching where none is present.

Yikes...dunno what happened between my post and now. I'm certainly not the foremost expert on doubled dies by any standards but I have extensively collected and studied them, specifically those found on Lincoln cents. As has been said in previous posts...

1) The 1970s Lincoln cents are known for thicker designs and extensive die deterioration. These are commonly mistaken for class 6 doubling (especially the 1974 Lincolns in which both small and large date design varieties exist).

2) USB scopes, in particular their lighting, are notorious for giving the illusion of supposed notching/doubling. I have used multiple different USB scope brands and have noticed this issue to varying degrees on all of them.

I think supposed "notches" are likely tricks of the light from the USB scope. I have seen many posts from Rick over the years in which I feel this is the case.

With those things in mind, in my opinion the coin does not exhibit a doubled die. However I have been wrong many times and encourage the original poster to send it in to an authentication service (Wexler, coppercoins etc) if they truly feel they have something. Sometimes coins appear differently in-hand than they do in posted images.

I'm going to be honest. I thought it was directed towards me and thought about our past arguments and how stupid they were. I thought you were mad at me for saying what non cents said was non cents.... cause everyone's quoting me on that. I'm sorry. I just expected it to be towards me cause you didn't quote anyone and I was the only one who said something that could be taken out of context. I guess I need to burn past notes we have exchanged, and move on. I apologize and I mean that too
