Hi, can anybody help me a little (a lot) with this Augustus coin? I think it is an AE As. I am unable to find it mainly because I can't identify what is on the reverse. Have looked at hundreds of Augustus coins with altar or temple, so maybe I am just wrong and it is something completely different: Diameter 23 x 24 mm, weight 13.66 g Obverse: head to r.legend: AECI or ACCI legend: IMP - KA Reverse: don't know what it is Very grateful for your input! Chris
howdy, you might need to enlarge the pics a little for the members, but i'm sure they'll try and help ya. i don't know too much about those.
I went to vcoins and typed in "Augustus temple" and that seemed to work. I do not vouch for the value of the comparable coins there.
Thanks Valentinian, I did what you said. I think you mean the one shown as Egypt, Alexandria under Augustus, AE Diobol? Maybe it is similar, (I mean the temple is similar), but I think the legends are different therefore I believe that the reference should also be different. I am interested in finding the appropriate reference, not the value
It's possibly an unrecorded Augustus Mars Ultor type, usually a silver cictorphorus or silver denarius but there has been an AE specimen sold at auction recently....https://www.biddr.ch/auctions/numismatiknaumann/browse?a=166&l=152470, not sure but a possibility.
Thanks Ancient Aussie but I still think the inscription is different...maybe it is not a temple at all but a fiscus?, sella quaestoria ???
they are very hard to read, maybe I am mistaken? will try again by daylight and again with a magnifying glass
Here is another two variations to compare....https://www.cngcoins.com/Coin.aspx?CoinID=129138...........https://www.cngcoins.com/Coin.aspx?CoinID=249735.
Thank you very much Ancient Aussie and Theodosius for the info and the heads up. Have been trying to read the legend under different light conditions. They are definitely very hard to decipher. It seems that the legends on the provincial coins are sometimes difficult to read :-( the most similar one is this one, which is one of the variations that Ancient Aussi sent: https://www.cngcoins.com/Coin.aspx?CoinID=129138 As we can see also here the legends are unreadable (at least for me) and apparently cng can't read them either.... On my coin, the left symbols on the reverse could well be KAI, but on the right I read ΠA which doesn't seem to match the coins in the links that Ancient Aussi sent for comparison. But I could very well be wrong. On the obverse it is even harder, on the left it could be ?CCI or ?ECI or any of these last two but ending in A. There is something under his chin, but definitely unreadable .. however, I think the reference RPC 5003; Milne 5; Emmett 3 might be right. Thanks again for your valuable input, it is very, very much appreciated! Will be sending another indecipherable one later asking for your help Chris
If its the same as the CNG coin the obverse would be CEBACTOC, the reverse KAICAP. I dont have the right font of course, but the "C"'s will be block, not rounded.
Here is the other one where I have no clue - on the obverse Augustus and the legend AVGVSTVS, but on the reverse can't read the legend nor identify who it is. Diameter 16 x 18 mm, 5.07 gr Thanks a lot for your help! Chris
You are right Ken, we can also see the description here:http://coinproject.com/coin_detail.php?coin=184185 Thanks a lot!
