Let's post some pictures of square coins, maybe with a little background about them too. They could be from anyplace on the planet as long as they are SQUARE. Here is a Half Tanka from central India dated around 1513.
Not exactly a square coin, but a square flan at least. Its a Philip I sestertius from 248 AD. The quality of the Roman mints was seriously declining by this time, leading to such poorly produced coins as this. I also have a Moorish square dirham that I should really get a scan of.
I found it while hiking outside of a small village in the east Himalayas… j/k :mouth: It was an impulse buy. Temple token 1556-1605, Persian inscriptions, Emperor Akbar
hi.. i think this is a silver temple token used during the period of Akbar (1543 - 1605) (it is an imitation of Akbar Rupee)..
Can you post a pic of the coin it’s copied from? I was supposedly used in Hindu temples. I wonder why a Muslim token was used in Hindu temples. Did Akbar force the temples to change or was this simply the temples changing for convenience?
Not to worry guys I wouldn't do that. I DO have some Illinois tax tokens that are square. I'll post pics if I find them.
Design Notes OBVERSE: Three shields of arms, dove above. The arms, parted per pale, display the Dexter half of the imperial eagle and Nuremburg's white and red bands (diagonal stripes). The initials below the shields, "I.M.F" are for , Johann Martin Forster, the city's mint master from 1755 until 1764. The date 1700 is in Chronogram ~ REVERSE: A lamb, Paschal lamb - the emblem of gentleness, holding a banner inscribed PAX, standing on a globe. The legend surrounding in Latin "TEMPORA NOSTRA PATER DONATA PACE CORONA" - "Father Crown Our Times With The Gift Of Peace". These coins were original struck in 1700 to greet the new century. This coin was restruck sometimes in 1755-64. This coin design expressed the hope that the new century would be less warlike than the previous hundred years. These coins were struck in values ranging from 3 ducats to 1/32 of a ducat. Both round and square "Klippe" planchet varieties were struck.
Here are my Suriname 5 cent-coins: in nickel-brass, aluminum and copper-plated steel. As you can see, they're coming right out of circulation.
