Well I guess nobody is here because I scored twenty two common morgans for twenty five each. All are MS-62/3 except for this beauty which is raw but I'm calling MS-65. Please let me know if there are any other towns without collectors so that I can go pick them dry. Shot with my phone at the hotel. The luster doesn't show to well, but it's pretty nice.
It was a pawn shop, but has a huge selection of coins. I only wished that I brought more cash with me, they wouldn't accept plastic. I would have probably bought all ten rolls that she brought out for me to look at. Not to mention that there was a nice older lady and her really hot daughter running the place.
Welcome to CT Justin. I'm not really an error guy, but it looks like a strike through to me. Take that with a grain of salt though. You'll get many more answers from the error and varieties guys if you start your own thread. Let me know if you need help starting one.
Never had luck with coins at a pawn shop. Will check out some more because it's probably a numbers game, maybe cherry pick with some luck.
Great look and color! Sure feels good when that happens and makes all the dud stops worth it. ...though I've started a nice little antique Americana collection of small things I've come across digging through crusty junk in antique stores while hunting for coins. I found a huge collection of sheet music covers the other day (didn't even know they were collectible) and one from 1912 had a spitting image of lady liberty in full color from the side with an outstretched arm like on the Walkers. I didn't have cash on me but might have to go back and grab that to share here and hatch a conspiracy theory or two.
I'm surprised how so many pawn shops won't sell their coins. It's not unusual at all for the person at the counter to tell me that the owner doesn't sell silver or gold coins. I don't know if they collect them, think that they will get more melting them down, or they are just hoarding them, but it seems that very few sell anything other than modern mint products. Even then finding a good deal is tough. This score was one of my best, and I travel constantly and stop in every pawn or coin shop that I find.
I'm not really a Morgan collector as I feel that they are severely overpriced generally, but when I find MS Morgan's for $25 each I'll empty my pockets and buy as many as possible. The owner gave me her information and said that she would accept a bank wire if I wanted the rest. I don't think that I'll buy them all, but I'll take a few more rolls off of her hands. That Liberty cover would be interesting to see. I wonder who ripped off whom there. Although it predates the half release in 1916, I don't know when the design was initially proposed and made public. Definitely a piece to grab. My only similar find was a plaster bust of Lincoln made by Victor David Brenner. I haven't been able to find out much about it yet, but the profile is very similar to the Lincoln cent. It's been suggested that it may have been an early study piece for the eventual final design, but I haven't been able to determine if that is correct or not and have found no evidence to support that theory. I plan to bring it to the Whitman show next year to see if anyone can identify it or its purpose. It may end up just being fake, but I've enjoyed it anyway.
