Unbelievable, the Peoria newspaper posted a followup on this story (original story here http://www.cointalk.org/showthread.php?t=29165). http://www.pjstar.com/stories/100307/POL_BEHHFM61.033.php http://www.pjstar.com/stories/100507/POL_BEI46G21.033.php A couple things that make you jump out of your seat 1. "The teen's mother has reimbursed the store" 2. "It is believed the coins in the proof set are not actually legal tender." 3. "Police said the teenager didn't know the coins could not be spent." This may actually motivate me to print out both articles and mail them to the US Mint asking them to followup with phone calls and letters to 1. The Macomb Police (to tell them they are idiots and request that they formally apologize to the teenager) 2. The McDonalds (to send them all the marketing materials for the new dollar coins, remind them that they all are legal tender, and encourage them to return the second $4 to the teenager) 3. The Bank (also to send them all the marketing materials for the new dollar coins, remind them that they all are legal tender, and refer them to the US Mints product release schedule website) 4. Especially the Teenager (to let him know that ALL US Mint issued coins are indeed legal tender and possibly even send him a replacement proof set and ecourage him to collect them, not spend them). Does anyone know of any e-mail addresses at the US mint that can be used to submit such a request, or does it have to go via snail mail.
It would not amaze me, if the Secret Service had the coins destroyed like they did with the two rolls of 1969-S "Doubled Die" Lincoln Cents that they thought were Counterfeit, thus destroying one hundred of the most sought after Doubled Die Cents ever minted! Frank
Frank: I remember that incident very well--- and the owner of the coins was never reimbursed for his/her losses. So two things are evident-- the public (MacDonalds and the police) can be idiots. Second: That kid deserves one heck of an apology. Lets get the address of the police station and mass mail them telling them that they are idiots, and do the same with the Secret Service.
Oi, this got me a tad annoyed, I can't stand ignorance! I even replied to it, I think I was the last one that did, if you want to read it, I used my Phoenix21 name. I think I was pretty calm, considering I'm banging my head against my computer. At the very least they owe him an apology. I followed up my comment with another stating that. I'm on a roll. Phoenix
I wrote the newspaper who pulished the stories and gave them an idea how I felt about things, and then I referred them to here. Poor kid
Maybe the suggestions should be mailed to the Macomb Police Depatment: Macomb Police Department 120 South McArthur St, Macomb IL 61455 309-833-4505 E-mail: postmaster@macombpolice.com
This is how I felt I emailed the newspaper. It was something like this. http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x275/clembo1872/headbanging3pq.gif
well being the 4-5 thread on this story i will tell you the same thing if the kid is dumb enough to spend proof coins then they mght as well count as real money
But the thing is that for this teenager, it's probably like a nightmare that never ends. Not only is he out a proof set (his fault for cracking it open be accidental damage or intentional), but they made him pay more money. These people keep advertising their stupidity.
This is very funny....I am amazed the police could be SO stupid...after all, a couple of minutes on google would give you all important infromation.
Not just police, they are the town's DETECTIVES. Again, you have to feel sorry for the people of that town if they ever need to report a real crime. I can see it now, the stolen car victim gets charged with filing a false report because they report their 2008 model year vehicle stolen and the detective concludes that's impossible because it's only 2007.
