Well, it IS nice that they apprehended the suspect. I knew you could buy fakes on that site. What i didnt know, was that you could buy fake ngc/pcgs holdered coins there too. Anybody have photos of the ones he sold OR ones you can buy online ???
That is kind of scary! What is the future of collecting if this stuff starts to flood the market??

All the more reason to know your coins better and trust holders less . . .

NGC and PCGS have certificate verification websites to check cert #'s and usually have pictures of both side of the coins.

Actually, PCGS doesnt usually have photos of the coin. You have to pay extra for that service, so that"s NOT the big tell for a counterfeit coin/holder. Im not worried about ME buying a c/f, more concerned for others.
I was just curious what these fakes looked like and how good are they getting at faking these?

The fake coins are fantastic and the holders are even better. I've seen websites telling you what to look for to tell the fake holders from the real ones but apparently the fraudsters read the same stuff and adjust accordingly. And the serial numbers on the holders are matched up to legitimate numbers on the websites. That's why PCGS has invested so much money in its secure holders that can be scanned and confirmed by the handheld PCGS scanner which apparently scans the holder to detect the trace element of some undisclosed chemical additive put in the holders just for the purposes of authentication.

But it doesn't work very well when you are considering buying items online. And eventually the counterfeiters will determine what that trace additive is, and then your $300 scanner will be worthless.

Condor101, truer words were never spoken. And they are also counterfeiting the Panpac packaging for 1/10 ounce gold bars, etc. Next will be the "mint sealed" tubes and monster boxes (if it hasn't happened already). It will soon get to the point where you can't buy anything from anyone who isn't with a huge company backing up the lifetime guarantee of legitimacy or from a someone you've know for 20 years -- assuming he/she wasn't unknowingly ripped off.

They've been around for a long time hence they keep upping the security on the slabs. A lot of them are really bad and they're mostly the older generation with wrong fonts and/or spacing ect

The additive is more a cheat for them then the general public anyway. Even if they do get the additive right there is still a trueview attached to those now.
