i posted these two a couple months back as part of a larger group looking for input. Thought I'd revive the request specific to these two. Would love any insight as to origin, date range and value. Both coins are roughly dime size.

I'm just guessing here but without doing a lot of research my guess would be there's a good chance they're both cast counterfeits. Just based on the way they look. Could easily be wrong though.

How could I further determine authenticity? Could weight or metal content even help in such a case. I looked through a lot of resources online and couldn't find a similar obv/rev pairing.

I've probably got the books to look them up, but it would take some time to do so, possibly quite a few hours. It's been quite a few years since I immersed myself in French feudal coinage. And today, I simply don't have the time.

But if no one else responds in a few days, well maybe I'll give it a try.

By no means should you put yourself out on my account. If anyone can point me towards a comprehensive online resource I don't mind spending the time.

I guess I should add at least this much. The one coin, it looks like traces of silver over copper, and it looks to have been cast. Those two things all by themselves usually only mean one thing - counterfeit.

The second, it also looks cast. And by itself is often enough to suspect counterfeit. However, if memory serves there were 1 or 2 French feudal mints that cast coins during times of war. So even though slim, there's still a chance it might be one of them.

And, each coin also looks to been heavily clipped, so size and weight won't mean much.

All of these things ran through my mind in the first 10 seconds after looking at the coins. But that's about as far as I can go without doing the research.

And I don't consider it me putting myself out. That's why I'm here. So don't worry about that.

I suspect that most of the time you can't even find what you need to know at an on-line source. Most of the time you need books.
