Greetings Coin Aficionados ! My 2013, 66th Edition Red Book has no Grade List for Lincoln Memorial, Bicentennial or Shield Small Cents. Does anyone know what grades the Editors intend for us to apply on these particular cents ? Thanks ! ToddB67
If you mean the grades listed for each coin across the tops of the pages, it sounds like a proof reading mishap before it went to production. You could give them a call and ask for a corrected page be sent to you to add to the book.
I just looked at my 2013 book, and it has the "MS-65" and "PF-65" on a black header across the top for everything from 1969 to date. It also has "MS-63" for the years, 1959-1968. I assume that you are wondering why it doesn't have any other grades listed like they do for the earliest years. It is probably because it would take up too much room. Chris
cpm9ball, Thanks for your reply ! Yes, the assumption in your second paragraph is correct and I'll refer to the black header you mentioned for the grades. ToddB67
Keep in mind though, Chris' response. Many coins listed in this era are not worth being assigned grade values below a certain point as they are considered to be worth only face value. I don't have my books handy but anything below XF in late date Lincolns really is not worth the ink to print values for. As for Shield Cents, not worth listing below MS60. Maybe that might change 20 or more years down the road when they become harder to find in circulation.
BooksB4Coins, The "Grade List" I refer to in post #1 is the list of coin grades like G4, VG-8, F-12 and on up to MS-65, including definitions. This full list (Not the black bar) usually appears at the beginning of each section of coin type. For an example, see the page in The Official Red Book of United States Coins, by R.S. Yeoman and Kenneth Bressett for "Lincoln, Wheat Ears Reverse (1909-1958)". ToddB67
tommyc03, Sorry, I made a mistake in my reply to you, i.e. "Yes, the assumption in your second paragraph is correct and I'll refer to the black header you mentioned for the grade." That reply should have gone to cpm9ball (Chris), so I Edited and changed the recipient's name in that post. Thanks for sharing coin knowledge and opinions with me ! ToddB67
Excellent point, Tommy! Personally, I think it would be a waste of time to quote "modern" values for anything below MS65. Chris
