I vote dress like a soldier. Use the shield and sword to fend off unruly customers. A sling bullet might come in handy too. How do you plan to order your display? I would go with trays of collecting areas if you can. Oldest (Greek) on left and newest (LRB) on right? Good luck!
Good idea! How 'bout a nude Hoplite? (When pigs fly, right?? ) Have fun, JA! Sounds like you're heading into it with the right attitude
John: I don't know you (yet) but I certainly wish you well. I am glad to hear of a dealer that has ancients that will fit my (extremely thin) wallett. Again, good luck.
Interesting to know how it was received. Smaller shows I have been at don't have many ancients and larger shows have lots of big bucks ancients.
I wouldn't be surprised if he does OK. Nice coins at fair prices likely to attract a couple of modern collectors.
Always have widows mites, and display an artifact as a draw even if it isn't for sale as a eye catcher. I always have artifacts with me even if I'm flying to a show I'll bring some. My best to you, M.X.
Any idea of how long it would take to price, remove the pesky and tiny sticker and then re-price them on 100,000 coins? Ok. More realistically, 12,000 coins? (Which is approximately the number or pieces I haul to the show.)
Hey thanks for the input and well-wishes everyone! So I guess @TIF wants to see me naked huh? That's a new development. I hope my wife doesn't see this thread, or there will be hell to pay. But I think it's probably best for everyone concerned if I keep my clothes on for this event. I finished putting together the two budget trays, found the nicest coins I could ranging from $5 to $25 dollars. Most of them are LRB's, but there are few Provincial, Greek, and Eastern. I also have another tray to fill up with a couple of consignments and I'm also seeing a dealer friend in Philly on Wednesday, so I'll probably come away with a bunch of new coins from that as well. I told him I need all the popular stuff - Owls, and Alexander III and Biblical, etc. I think 5 trays should do it - I only have an 8-foot table and I need to leave room for people to sit and take a look-see, which reminds me that I've got to go to Staples or some such place and get some lighting. @David Setree Rare Coins - I'm nowhere near your level of inventory, and probably never will be. I can only imagine what a thorny business it is keeping track of everything!
No John. It's not a problem. I know that when I throw something on that thing that calls itself my desk, that I will eventually see it again. Sometimes it takes ten years but......
You do not have to be a dealer to benefit from having a price code system that allows you to write what you paid on a holder/label. There are many 'codes' and it is not hard to invent one that will be easy for you to use and not easy for others to crack. Dealers in moderns might be able to get away with using Greek numerals but I wouldn't do that for ancients because too many of us know them. When I started using mine, I thought I should record the cents but now that seems unnecessary. I had to modify mine when I bought my first $100 coin so it would be good to put some thought in what you choose.
Darn John, if some of these modern guys don't have an epiphany and start forking over large wads of cash for those sweet ancients, there's clear something wrong with them. No sane person could resist the mix of sweet budget and mid-tier coins you put together there.
Right? I need some Athenian Owl tets though - it's probably the most famous ancient coin among collectors of moderns.
When I did small shows in the Denver area I got a lot of tire kickers asking if my coins were real and how they were made and such. It was rare I didn't make more than the table fee, but then again I was usually the only ancients dealer there. Do you have lamps to go with the trays?
