I am about to embark on collecting Lincoln Varieties and would like some help formulating a collecting strategy. I'm going to buy Looking Through Lincoln Cents as I've been told it is excellent. I already have The Standard Guide to the Lincoln Cent. I also belong to CopperCoin. I have unlimited access to rolls of pennies from my bank. However, I noticed occasionally in Coin World "Unsearched Wheats" by the pound. Are they really unsearched whether for key dates, valuable varieties or whatever? And if truely unsearched, can someone recommend a good dealer/source for the coins. I'm open to any suggestions on how to proceed or other sources of information. Thanks in advance to all who respond...................
First off, good luck with collecting! Don't mean that sarcastically, I mean it. Hope you get enjoyment out of it. And then second off, I'd be weary about buying "unsearched" bags, cuz most of the time they are searched. So, unless they are very reputable and well known, or if you know them, then I guess it's safe. That is my advice for you. Hope it helps! Phoenix
Get rolls of pennies from the bank. They are good to search through. I found one with a lamination error i think it is called. There are so many years/varities in circulated rolls. Apparently also the modern wide AM varities turn up in rolls but i don't know much about them.
I would also suggest the Cherrypicker's Guide. As for the wheats, I think they are searched more for key dates than varieties and the less well known the variety the greater the chances it wasn't searched for. Though, I think it's almost impossible to find something truly unsearched for anything.
Well just go to the bank, and ask for a box of pennys...I do a box a day on my job...I find lots of neat stuff.....wheats, Canadian....A few older uncirculated that you've got to wonder how they got there...its fun, and dont cost much...Tom
if you buy stuff from ebay and other sites or dealers like that, you search them, and not find anything then your stuck with them. can't sell them from what you got it for. if you go to the bank, you can search them, take what you want and then cash them in and get what you paid for them! and you make a profit! it sounds strange, but its true!
