I have ben having difficulty finding 2009 dimes (US). Seemed strange to me at first, I had (3) full folders all missing 2009 dimes. Statistically, I figured theprobability of finding a 2009 would be the same as any other year. I did a little research and found out that the mint only made 146 million in 2009. Years previous and past had 1 billion or more. Anyone know what was so special about 2009 and minting dimes?
146 Mil is still a goodly sum. Not like it's something to hoard dear fellow. Haven't the slightest idea why they can't be found.........
The Federal Reserve notified the US Mint that they would not be ordering dimes and nickels due to the financial crises that was occurring during 2009. THAT is why the 2009 dimes had such a low mintage since production didn't pick up until late in the year. For the record, both dimes and nickels were distributed to Puerto Rica where enterprising sellers were making a literal KILLING on selling rolls they found there. (Look for rodzm post.) https://forums.collectors.com/discussion/718370/2009-nickels-and-dimes-extremely-low-mintages http://www.coinnews.net/2009/04/29/us-mint-halts-2009-nickels-and-dimes-production/
Interesting, thanks for the feedback. I am still looking for some those dimes, anyone planning a trip to Puerto Rico soon?
