    @Sallent, that's a nice OP coin!
    You can read an introduction to the argenteus denomination at my site:

    http://augustuscoins.com/ed/argenteus/

    The first coin there mentions "XCVI" which is "96" in Roman numerals for "96 to the [Roman] pound of silver."

    Not the cheapest late Roman coins in the market, but it was made possible due to me consolidating my collection and getting rid of coins I no longer want. When I first started I bought lots of coins because I was trying to collect as much as possible of everything that was there to see what I liked and didn't like. You don't know until you try.

    However, after 2 years I realized what really interests me are Roman, Greek, Parthian/Sassanian, and to a lesser degree Chinese.

    Which means I'm doing away with medievals, Islamic, and Indian coins. The cash coming from that allowed me a rare treat like that Argenteus, and will probably allow me to complete gathering a set of Gallic Emperors including the pricier Marius, a few more tetrarchs, and maybe even a good down payment on a solid example of Carausius, of the so-called Britanic Empire (his coins ain't cheap).

    I saw Lord Macovan's "Eclectic Box" collection on the Coin Chat forum and was amazed by his collection. I'm sure there are people here with even better collections. But it made me want to dip my toe into the ancient coin pool. Some of them are pretty reasonably priced. Just trying to figure out how high I want to go.

    You can get very nice ancient coins for very reasonable prices...and I mean cheap. I personally suggest that approach - buying nice common ancients at affordable prices just to get a feel for it.

    Then again...you could go out and plunk down a larger amount on something a bit more special...but if it's not something that excites you than you're stuck with...

    Today is turning out to be an amazing day. Not only the Argentus, but also got my new telescope in the mail. My son and I will do a little backyard astronomy if it ever stops raining here in South Florida

    Great coin and good scope!

    I used a 1966 Japan made Tasco 7TE-5 refractor. It's even registered as a rare complete survivor. One of the finest quality scopes ever produced.
