Free counting machine at CU.... The lobby is open 24/7 w/ fob access -- I dump 1x per wk AFTER HOURS, bc otherwise it gets really embarassing, round after round, lol! Takes about 1hr. to finish. The machine credits my savings account immediately, I withdraw the money the next day and deposit at my ordering bank.
That's an awesome set up you have. I was doing 5-6 boxes of halves a week and had to drive all over the city to dump. I am trying to tone it down to save gas and time as the more driving and time it takes you do for CRH the less money you make. Any good finds in those boxes you are getting?
Speaking of dumping in coin counting machines, have any of you had issues with, or suspected, you were being shorted? I recently started dumping in a coin counter now that I have an account with a credit union that has them, and when looking at the breakdown on the receipt one thing that stood out was the $19.50 in half dollars recorded. I certainly could be mistaken, but I'm fairly confident that the two rolls of halves I emptied into the counter where full. Am I being paranoid, or is this just considered to be an acceptable pseudo-fee, similar to occasionally getting short CWRs?
When I used to dump my coins in the machines sometimes I got shorted and sometimes I got a lot more money back due to jamming and other peoples dumps not going all the way through. I actually came out ahead. Now the tellers dump my coins and they are almost always spot on. You are not being paranoid as shorting is common. That was one reason why Wells Fargo got rid of their machines. Think of getting shorted as a little tuition to do what you do. It's a drop in the bucket as far as I am concerned.
Okay, that's what I figured. Since my coin counting machine usage is otherwise free, it's still a pretty good deal for the service.
My main dump bank for non-halves has an awesome coin counting machine that is free to customers and self serve. They do let me buy the half dollar bag off that machine when it gets a significant amount in it, but that takes a really long time to fill. I also bought a couple of quarter bags when I was filling my state quarters album. I trust this machine because on the half and quarter bags I have never gotten shorted and sometimes I get a few extra bucks worth of other change in the half bag. So, I figure my dumping is probably being counted correctly. It's a super fast machine too compared to a Coinstar. My other bank has a "free to customers" machine in the vault and they dump my coins for me which I don't really like because I wonder if any of my coins get rejected. Plus that machine must be super slow because it takes 10 minutes or more compared to 1-2 minutes with the other bank's machine. I haven't been counting my dump coins ahead of time but I think I will next time just for grins. I dump all my halves at a 3rd bank and I have to roll them because they got rid of their counting machines in the spring. I buy boxed halves from that bank but at branches different than where I dump.
Matter of fact, I'm walking up to my bank here in a bit and get $25-30 worth of pennies. BTW, I was shorted a roll of 50¢ pieces on the 1st box of two $500 boxes I received, Pissed me off, there were only 24 rolls on bottom layer of the box. That's a $10 loss & $5 fee. Grrrrr but I did pull four-90% along with twelve-40%....hooked I am!!!
And 1 more thing, I find some of the weirdest coins/items CRH. I found a cent with an Angel carved out instead of Lincolns face, the same box where I pulled 16 silvers out of had a Chinese or japanese ....idk what it is. I ordered a USB microscope for looking at details on coins. I'll post when I get it. Shipping from China....probably be a year before I receive. This hobby is neat to me.
