How do you catch all 4 tetrarchs at once? Well, there is the hard way....buying 4 coins at one time, or you can throw a Poke Ball into the bushes and hope to get lucky by catching 4 wild tetrarchs in one go. You know how the song goes..."Tetrarchs, got to catch them all, you know it's my destiny..." Well, I laid in ambush and Fortuna smiled on me and rewarded me for my efforts, as these 4 bad boys of the late 3rd Century and early 4rth Century are currently on their way to me. You better believed I pounced hard on this rare silver argenteus with all 4 tetrarchs, like a mountain lion who hasn't eaten in a week jumping a plump yet not too bright deer who let his guard down. GALERIUS as Caesar, AD 293-305. AR Argenteus, 21mm, 2.7g, 12h; Rome, c. 294. Obv: MAXIMIANVS CAES; Laureate head right. Rev: VIRTVS MILITVM; The tetrarchs sacrificing over tripod before city enclosure with six turrets. Reference: RIC VI Rome 29b, p. 353, r2. However, Fortuna is a fickle Goddess, and she'll just as quick smile on you as she'll urinate on your dreams. The Greek playwriters used to say that an overly fortunate man was a man in serious danger. The Gods don't like a mortal getting too lucky. And thanks to the ancient Greek playwriters I know just how to stave off disaster...give up something I love! So to stave off misfortune, I'll send a free Late Roman Bronze of my choice to the first newbie to post on this thread who is coming from US coins to ancient coins, and shopping for their first ancient. There's been a few here lately, so if you know any, send them to this thread to be the fortunate one to claim their first ancient coin, and a free one at that. Please hurry, before Fortuna makes the US Post Office lose my new 4.5 inch Newtonian style dobsonian telescope. That would be a tragedy.
This type of Argenteus is really nice. MAXIMIANUS AR Argenteus OBVERSE: MAXIMIANVS AVG, laureate head right REVERSE: VIRTVS MILITVM, four tetrarchs sacrificing before walls with 6 turrets Struck at Ticinum, 295 AD 2.6g, 18mm RIC VI 18b
Nice one Bing. If no first time newbies coming from US to ancients posts within 5 hours, the contest for a Late Roman Bronze shall be opened to anyone here who resides in the US and who has less than 10 ancient coins (or. An ancients newbie)
Nice purchase. I have a Diocletian version of it with VICTORIAE SARMATICAE instead of VIRTVS MILITVM Diocletian, Argenteus Nicomedia mint, 3rd officina, AD 295-296 DIOCLETI ANVS AVG, Laureate head of Diocletian right VICTORIAE SARMATICAE, The tetrarchs sacrifying before a campgate. SMNΓat exergue 3.3 gr Ref : RCV # 12615 (1000), Cohen #491 var, Ahem, and I live not far from the USA and was a newbie less than 40 years ago Q
I had said. I cannot say that I haven't received or bought an Ancient coin. I was lucking enough to have a kind person donated me a few coins to get started and I bought a few. I have less then 10 coins still. Thank you for offering this.
Haha I fit that description perfectly but I'm not sure my parents will go for that lol. And great ancient 4 way collection. Great thread very kind of you to do that for people! Thanks, Jacob
We'll, as you are the first to fit the description, why don't you talk to your parents about wanting that Late Roman Bronze coin? I can ship it to their office or a PO Box address if they prefer. Talk to them and let me know, if they still say no, I'll pass it along to the next person then. But it's worth a try.
@MFish you are next in the list after Youngcoin. If his parents don't give him permission for me to mail a Late Roman Bronze coin to him, it's yours.
Do you have any Constantine I campgates? That's one of the candidates I was thinking of using for the giveaway.
I am pretty sure I don't have that one. 2 of coins are crusties that are not cleaning good at all. I think one is just a slug
Are you interested in Asian coins? I may have a medieval Chinese cash coin from around 730 - 750 AD I could send you in case Youngcoin gets to claim the Roman coin. It's definitely different from any coins the west ever minted, but as they have characters and not images, they are not everyone's cup of tea.
I haven't even seen one of those before. I'll look it up. It would be interesting. I'm interested. One other crusty I have looks Indian. It is cleaning up some. Thank you kind sir.
It's similar to this coin, though the characters are a little different as it's from a different dynasty 800 years after this coin. If that style of coin is of any interest to you, let me know. I tell you what, I'll send you one regardless of whether you also get the LRB or not. Just let me know if you are interested in these ancient Chinese "washers".
Yeah I am interested. This reminds me of the good fortune coins but much older. I honestly know less about these then I do Romans but I am interested in learning.
Yes it worth a try Sallent. thank you very much I'm thrilled and honored I'll ask my father he will be home later today so I can ask him then we will see! It is so kind of you to do this for fellow collectors and newbies thank you even if I'm not able to accept the coin I should know by tomorrow morning. Thank you, Jacob
Terrific Argenteus @Sallent !! Great posts guys!! I find this 'type' irresistible! Here's mine of Diocletian---not quite as pretty as 'Q's.....but I love it: AR Argenteus of Diocletian; Heraclea mint, 296 AD Laureate head right; DIOCLETIANVS AVG. The four Tetrarchs sacrificing over a tripod before city enclosure with six turrets. HE in exergue; VICTORIAE SARMATICAE RIC 10a, RSC 491 b; 2.92 grams, 17 mm Congrats to the give-a-way winner!!
