Nice end run, idhair agreed to drop the subject, but one of his "friends" picked it up for him. You are not worth the time to respond to.

I and Idhair are not freinds. I mearly asked because im interested in ancients. Your mouth caused the problem. Nothing more. No man in the grassy knoll. I wanted to how the raw one u posted graded in the slab. Maybe before you react give the person the benefit of doubt like u want from others.

It would be cool to get past this in a new thread and keep it just about fake 55 DDOs. Anyone have good images of fake ones?

Assuming the obverse is vertical in the holder and the reverse image was taken square 1955 DDO Rotation.JPG

That's a fairly big assumption. So as not to waste your time and talents, you may want to either get a "raw" genuine coin to inspect OR go on the Heritage website and find a coin with a centered obverse and then measure the reverse rotation. ;)

As long as there is a profit to be made, some people will do anything, including breaking the law, to make that profit. My 1955 Double Die Lincoln that was determined to be counterfeit was not a quick make. Someone, with a great deal of ability, created a die to make the fake. That fake was food enough to fool a lot of people. I found the clip from Ed Wood very informative and learned a lot from it. I don't think I'll buy any high end coins that are not certified, as much as I learned, I'm sure I could still be fooled by a well made fake. It's just a fact of our hobby that counterfeits exist and we have to be careful when we buy raw coins. Even if you know the person you're buying from, they may not know the coin is counterfeit.

I'm a little late to the party as usual. I also have been blessed with a counterfeit 55/55.
Fortunately I'm not out any money, and also kept the coin. The longer I'm involved in this hobby the more skeptical I become of every coin I see. This was a lousy attempt (in my opinion ) of counterfeiting. Abe's nose, ear, hair and beard just look funky. The rotation is off about 10%, but clockwise. IMG_4848.JPG IMG_4849.JPG

Lol the obverse of that one is comically bad, which is kind of strange as the reverse isn't totally horrible.

I like this coin. Even though it's an obvious fake to most collectors with some experience, I think it's still pretty cool. What's the weight?

That one is cool...Looks like a coin that was made to be spent at the Springfield quickie mart in The Simpsons ;)

Do you think it was done with a mold instead of cutting a die?

Maybe it's just the photos but the spread on "LIBERTY" seems different. Some of the letters on OP's coin looks like the spread is north and Idhair's is south. That's just IMHO.

Is that Karl Malden, or Jimmy Durante on that coin?

    Quick question TheMont.......

You say NGC graded your Athens Tetradrachm. Do you have the invoice number? Assuming you are the person that submitted the 1955 and 1922 cents, there have been no submissions from that same submitter of an Athens tetradrachm. Did you submit it through another dealer or under a different name?

I don't recall seeing the coin you posted in the discussions above, but I see 15-50 Athens tets every day, so I may have forgotten it.

I bought the Athenia coin, shown, graded. I think it may be from MCM.

The '55 DD and '72 DD where submitted for me by OCC Coin out of CA, a great company to deal with. They were reholdering a 1965 SMS Kennedy Half (MS 68!) I bought from them and they offered to send in the two Lincoln's along with a batch they were sending in.

That all makes sense. Just want to find the photo of the coin in a holder. Not sure if I saw it or not. It might have been before my time because I don't recall it.
