I knew this was going to happen. The CCAC ( Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee) rejected all seven of the U.S. Mints proposed designs to mark Abraham Lincolns presidency on the reverse of the cent in 2009, telling the designers they didnt get the symbolism of their proposals. In a meeting that saw the CCAC endorse the Mints ideas for three other cent reverses to mark the bicentennial of Lincolns birth, the panel appealed to Mint Director Moy to have the designers return to their drawing boards for the fourth time. I agree with what was mentioned previously in a seperate thread, I believe they should just go back to the "wheat" reverse. We all knew those designs were sub-par before the CCAC reviewed them. Did anyone else read the entire article in this weeks Coin World?
I read the article. I'm not sure that all the commemorative coins should have the wheat reverse, but at least one of them should. I don't think I would have gotten the symbolism of the capitol dome under construction without reading about it. I think they could do better.
Yes, one cent with a wheat reverse would be nice. I forgot to mention and if someone could answer this for me I would be forever grateful. Who exactly is the CCAC and why do they have such a powerful influence on what designs are chosen for our coinage? I thought that all had to be passed and approved by Congress.
I hope they don't go back to the wheat back design. We saw that already for 50 some years. Surly they can find a suitable replacement. Guy~
While I agree that the wheat reverse saw its share of time I dont see anything wrong with having it back as a one year commemorative design but I really dont see it happening. The purpose of the design change for 2009 is to commemorate Abraham Lincoln and not the reverse design of the cent. So, all of the new reverse designs have to symbolize Lincolns presidency. To be honest, I didnt see any that I would jump up and down about out of pure excitement.
I was thinking the other day about what would make a good reverse design. Wouldn't it commemorate Lincolns presidency if we put the design that was in place during it? thats right.. The IHC reverse design! or better yet , The flying eagle obverse design.
unless they make a 2009 s vdb wheat head reverse from copper just like the orignal and include it in proof sets in the same way they did the 1996 w dime in the mint sets, I say poo to the mint and their garbage
it would be pretty neat to get the wheat cent reverse back on the cents. then people that don't collect coins will get an old wheat cent in change, think its one of the new ones and then spend it. and then coin roll hunters get it!:kewl: lol, i wonder what that would do to the wheat cent prices.:mouth:
I have mentioned in other threads the the Flying Eagle would be cool. Course it won't happen. We did look at the wheat ears for 50 years but we've been looking at Lincoln's mug for 100! Wouldn't mind seeing them change the obverse design at this point.
I would love to see the wheat back. Much easier to grade. The current reverse is 48 years and I'm tired of it. Tired of the Kennedy also time for a change on that one too
