Have another opinion on a half dollar!!!!

  1. I have two 1996 P with the line coming from the neck is this an error?

    Looks like a die crack.

    It's a point of stress on the dies of this particular design; cracks in this location are pretty common on Kennedys.

    Anyone observe the mint mark on this coin? If you do, can you say what year the mint quit punching mint marks into the dies?

    The P mint mark is supposed to be there. They didnt start putting it on the coins till 1980. 1979 was the last year that you won't find the P mint mark on the half dollar

    Hi Tyler,
    That wasn't what I was referring to. There are many claims out there that state the US Mint discontinued punching mint marks into the dies in 1989 for all US coinage. Your coin clearly shows the "crater" effect around the mint mark which is a clear indication that the mint mark was punched into the die that made it.
