Looks like an extra eyelid to me but I can't tell for certain. Seeing things again ? Ill get better shot if need be.
Check it with this: http://www.coppercoins.com/lincoln/diestate.php?date=1948&die_id=1948p1do001&die_state=lds I see a die crack at the bottom of the right wheat stalk, but I can't tell if it is exact. Keep in mind the crack as to be exact. It could be longer or shorter, but where they exist together, they have to be in the same location.
Beautiful photography! As a new member I'd like to ask if there is a thread that deals with taking photos this great.
My photos were hands down the worst just a few weeks ago. There are many people on here that will help with tips as well as threads on it. I just use my phone and a 7x loupe but once with a large glass so light can still get in. Also I now clean lenses on phone and loupe before photos. Lighting is very important and a lot of trying different things until you find what works best for your camera honestly.
Looks like my die crack comes in at the exact same spot but after it hits that bottom wheat kernel it hooks right. I thought I had another one there for a sec. The search continues. Thanks
Thanks for the info. I see that there are literally hundreds of these loupes to choose from at Amazon. What brand do you have, it this makes a difference? Also, I assume you put your camera right on top of the loupe, how do you keep it steady?
I actually got mine at hobby lobby. I found that I can set this loupe on top of the coin because the high rim and I put my l.e.d. light above it maybe 6-10" and I hold phone somewhere in the area depending on zoom. You just have to play with it. I don't mind sharing info but there are many others in here that are 100x better than me at it. If anyone sees this and can give him other ideas in case this does not work for you. Most of it is just practice and trying all sorts of things. I tried a really strong loupe and it was too much. A 7x-10x seems to be best. Some people aren't using a phone to view so this way it is viewable by people with computers as well. I use these 2 for looking for errors and the last setup is for photos. Cheap setup but it works for me. You can also get coin microscope fairly cheap on eBay. They do make zoom lenses that clip to your phone I just saw that are sweet so I might try that soon. This is all hobby lobby except light. That's home depot $20 at the most. Good luck
Oh yeah your lighting is more important than what kind of loupe or what is used to magnify with. These are all things I've learned from people in here. One of the best photos I saw in here was taken with iphone 4 I believe and he used the lens off a pair of reading glasses or some kind of glasses. You will know if your photos are junk real quick. People are brutally honest in here but they have to be when we are asking for help with coins and giving them photos that are worse than looking at a coin 4 ft away with no loupe. Just don't get frustrated here. I've done it a few times. I know they were doing a thread on photography with examples of worst photos and best if not mistaken. Search around the site and ask as many questions as you need to.
I've got an old KODAK Z700 camera, the specs of which aren't so bad, but I wonder how you can take pictures using that gooseneck lamp that looks like it's shining directly from above. It would seem to me that holding my camera above the loupe would block the light — just like in the forthcoming solar eclipse. It has a close-up setting that seems to work pretty well (see below), but I don't think it would work any closer than you can see here. If I put it on a tripod and had the flash active, that might work.
So what I do it put the light maybe 5" above it and slightly off center and I hold phone in hand at 8" or so and zoom passed the edge of light so I'm not blocking it. I try to come from the same angle like coming from the light itself. Tyler is pretty good at photos. I think he is around maybe he can help with anything I might be missing. I used to have camerw set to highest mp which was 15 or 13 and I played with 9, 7 , 3. Some of my best photos are with less pixels. Again something these guys taught me. You just have to play with variety of things until you are where you want to be. Me holding the camera is bad idea but I do not have a stand to hold things up yet. I have ordered a microscope but it never made it so now that I have that resolved I will find another one myself. You have the right idea though. Put tripod and zoom but I don't use more than 40% of the zoom because it transfers very distorted. Most people say no more than 25% of the zoom. Take sample pictures and post if you want and I don't mind telling you how clear they are. I was in the same boat just last week.
I have all the coin books and have yet to put more than 3 or 4 coins in it. I think its time for me to work on filling 1 up. I started to count my wheats last night looking for a 1922 I know I saw months ago and stopped just shy of 500 so I have a lot more than I expected. Do you use an online album as well?
No online album, I'm completely old school. Do I understand it that you need a 1922 (Philadelphia, I guess)? LMK and I'll see if I have one I can send you... it may take a while.
That's very nice of you. I think I have one. I remember seeing one I have been trying to find to show Tyler. I think I may be ok but I will let you know when I get book filled with what I have. Same goes for you, I have so many coins its kind of disturbing. They just need to be checked out. I'm sure I've missed tons of errors. Definitely rpms because I thought they were of no significance really but I now realize it may be more exciting trying to complete some of these checklists. There are several top 100 lists. Trying to figure out which one to focus on
Nice of you, too, @NewCollectorRick but there are only three Wheat Lincolns I need for a full set: 1909-S VDB, 1909-S and 1914-D. I am not willing to pay asking price for these, so those three holes will remain open, I guess. I'm on to the Indian Heads, now, but need only the early ones, 1860 to 1878. Most of the ones I've seen are either too badly worn or far too high priced. I've been outbid on many of them at eBay. I'm thinking of collecting a second set of Peace dollars after that — except for another 1928, that is.
Peace dollars are my favorite looking coin. I have no clue where I am on filling the book. I did find a 1909 VDB and lately I've pulled 1918, 1923, and I was to say a 1914 or 16. I will have to look. I should be close except for the super rare coins. I almost bought the 1909 S VDB but backed out. I was going to pay more because I can make payments on HSN. I purchased 1 Morgan from there. Cost me 150 before said and done. Coins not worth that but I wanted it. Its a NGC MS64 1880 S.
