NGC graded my '55 Double Die Lincoln : Not encapsulated-Not Genuine

Well, lesson learned, if I buy a high end coin, it should be graded or have a long enough return time to get it graded.
I sent NGC my ''55 double Die and '72 Double Die after the members of my Coin Club talked me into it. Three dealers and myself, with 50 years experience, never doubted that both would come back Mint State or the very least AU. Here's what hit my mailbox:

NGC said the '55 was made from a die pair that they had the markers for. It's a very good counterfeit and fooled a lot of people. We found four possible markers, but counterfeiters tend to "circulate" their fakes to give them a better chance of getting them accepted: the nick at 3 o'clock, scratched behind Lincoln's ear, the long scratch down his shoulder, and the closeness to the rim of the "L" in Liberty. Of course NGC won't tell me what they saw, so this is only speculation.

Actually, it could be significantly better than it is . . . the spread between some characters is disproportionate, and the sharpness of characters is terrible in some areas that would not be distorted by wear.

Do not be disheartened . . . those of us you see doing well in this hobby are doing so only because we stuck with it after being burned like yourself. Be careful about buying only slabbed coins, as that is the next province of the counterfeiters.

It is far more important that you become educated about what genuine mint made products are supposed to look like, and what clues the various counterfeiting techniques leave behind. If you don't, you'll have 2 problems on your hands:
    1. You'll be dependent upon the TPGs, instead of being independent of their market influence, and
    2. You won't be able to tell when you are considering a counterfeit coin in a counterfeit slab.

you learn as you go. an expensive lesson for sure. I would not buy a doubled die 1955 unless it was graded/slabbed by PCGS or NGC and verify if it looks like your coin in their pictures. can you post better pics of your 1972 doubled die OBV.

Lincoln Cent Resource says the reverse of the 1955 DD is 10% rotated counter clockwise. So if your reverse is aligned correctly, that's a huge red flag.

Here's the requested picture of the '72 Double Die:

I should mention that I've had the '55 since probably the '60s. Didn't know they made such good counterfeits back then. The '72 was a pretty recent buy.

Nice '72, any time I look at that or a '55, I get sick to my stomach.

Look at the slabbed picture of the '72 (first post), it graded MS62 Brown, was hoping for B/R. I figured out how to start a thread, but it didn't show up on my morning e-mail of 20 new threads. How are you all finding the tread?

I'm just glad you found the images of your 1955 to post and not my images of my coin that you claimed to own. It's time you came out and said you made a mistake.
You were not honest and I will never believe a word you say. Tell the truth or don't post it.

Do you understand the concept of libel? Get a life and leave me alone. I have had enough of a problem with my '55 coming back counterfeit, I don't need you spending lies about me. If your '55 looked so much like mine, I would suggest you also get it certified, it may have come from the same counterfeit die pair.

Counterfeits have been around since money has been around. It's only with the internet and the spread of stories do people think that it just started recently

I once won a 55DD on eBay , when I received it, well it didn't look right.
I did post a image on here (CT) and a lot of members agreed.
I did get my money back, but the seller did offer me 50% discount LOL.

Also do post here, you'll know soon enough if it's real or not.
We do have a lot of knowledgeable people here.

I appreciate the fact that there are knowledgeable people on this forum, but I believe that it's extremely hard to judge a coin from a picture. I'm not an expert, by any stretch of the imagination, but I want the coin to be in my hand before I make an important decision about it. Just my way of doing it, not necessarily the right thing for other people. I put a picture of and Athena Owl ancient on the forum, and half the people thought it was real and half though it was a replica. I took it to a coin show and three dealers who specialize in ancients not only felt it was genuine, but offered to buy it from me. I sent it in to NGC and it came back genuine.

I'm genuinely saddened to learn of your misfortune, and offer a heartfelt congratulations on the 72, but this is uncalled for. Even if only the innocent mistake I assume it to have been, he's every right to be upset.
