Hi All: Please review pics. This coin has a hole drilled in the top of it. Is it a coin or atoken? What would you grade it as? The image is from a scan> Any recommendations for getting a better image? Would it be worth sending to a TPG? If so, which one would you recommend? If you cannot increase the size, try these: [img=http://img252.imageshack.us/img252/6298/1872pennyrevro9.th.jpg] [img=http://img441.imageshack.us/img441/2879/1872pennyobvvo0.th.jpg]
Hello gewoodfo; I'm not that experienced so take it all with a grain of salt; Grade VG8 (based on some of the liberty showing) Corroded/Holed I am sure the hole hurts the value - someone with more experience can comment on value lost and any effect on the grade. No for sending to a TPG - grading would cost more than the coin is worth (I believe). It is a coin - They minted a little over 4 million that year From 1864 to 1909 the IHC was struck in Bronze It's a nice old US coin even with the hole. Hope this helps!!! Darryl
hey wood , very nice year for the indian cent , the production goes way down in the 70s. Even though your coin is holed , alot of collectors will argue that it gives more history than alot of other non problem cents.
What Darryl said. Agreed, VG. Value without the hole? $200 With the hole? Unknown on eBay? Priceless. No as for the TPG'ers.
All: Thanks for the info. I will not be letting go of this. It belonged to my great grandfather and I will keep it for my Grand kids!! Should I put it in something other than a 2x2?
Glad to hear you will hold on to it! Go to a local coin shop and buy an air-tite for it (ask for one that will fit a small cent - 19mm). They should not charge you more than a couple dollars. It's a hard plastic coin holder about the size of a quarter for your coin. This way the coin is better protected and you can show it to your kids and then their kids without worrying about further damage. It really is a nice old coin. Woodenspoon Boy made a good point about the mintage's. After the 1870's they started minting almost 10 times as many per year of the IHC. Good Luck!
still a nice looking coin! i would guess the value would be $35 becuase of the hole. without the hole though it would have been worth about $80. someone probaly holed it, wore it as a necklace for a couple days and put it away. usually holded coins are worn from rubbing on your chest and in you pockets. :hammer:
I don't follow regular coinage, but I've seen holed tokens in NGC slabs. Thankfully, PCGS has not entered the exonumia arena AFAIK.
In checking a bit, I see that NGC will assign MS grades to holed tokens, as well as slabbing restrikes of tokens that originally were made 100 years prior.
No not like ANACS, like the ones that NGC and PCGS will slab. Like This One You can read more about them - HERE
Not always, no. Attached are pics of a slabbed token that I believe was holed after manufacture. The hole is too sloppy looking for an "as made" hole, and if you have Rulau's Standard Catalog of United States Tokens 1700-1900, 4th edition, this exact token is listed on page 325 as NY 2006, NY 2007, and NY 2008 (same token in bronze, silver, and white metal). There is no mention of a hole in the description, and no hole is displayed in the photos of the piece. As made holes are typically closer to the rim than this one is. I can not say for absolute certain that it was not as made, but all attributes that I see indicate that it was done after manufacture.
Not even a mention of the hole on the label as they did in the example in GDJMSP's link. Maybe they didn't notice. (Oops, was that out loud?)
That token is not particularly valuable nor scarce either. It lists for $50 in Unc. in Rulau's catalog (2004).
