Below is an announcement from the NCIC . . . Doubtless the package was addressed to one of the many major US gold dealers in Newport Beach, and the delivery-person knew exactly who he / she was supposed to deliver to, bet big by changing the address to which it was supposedly delivered, won big, and is playing dumb on this one. I hope he / she gets steel bars for gold coins. Use the tracking number to go talk to your local Post Office that delivered them. If it was USPS. A Manager can look up GPS on the delivery and that would show where it was scanned delivered. If the local delivery office knows what they are doing, it shouldn't be to difficult to locate it. GPS and the Police can do wonders.
You both seem to have the wrong impression . . . these were not my coins. I just pointed out someone else's loss.
UPS/USPS should be able to back track to determine who "delivered" the package and hold them responsible.
Postal workers understand everything about the delivery process, and thieves smart enough to pass the postal exam are not dullards. The delivery person still can walk one door down from the addressee, forge a signature, scan the package, and then take it home with them. When postal investigators use GPS to check the delivery coordinates, it looks like an innocent mistake, and will follow up with the occupants where the package appears to have been delivered. When they can find no one to "come clean" as having received it, the USPS claims it did all it can, leaving the buyer and seller to work things out amongst themselves. I think any postal worker convicted of felony postal theft should pay restitution, lose their job, and forfeit their pension. That's disincentive for you.
I understand what you are saying Doug but as a Postal Employee I can not give details but I can assure you that these matters are taken very seriously as are the repercussions when caught, if they were stolen by a Postal Employee. I don't care who coins these were. They were somebody's and what happened is just not right. I was only offering a way to try and locate them. There are other measures as well. Some items are misdelivered, not theft and can be located and delivered correctly. Some of the cases reported to Postal Inspectors have been resolved in days, other years but they get results. One case I know of in my local area , theft of mail occurred over a period of years. Over 800 items were taken. When the evidence was clear, the employee lost their job, retirement, benefits and self respect. All but 46 were returned to the rightful owner. That's not to bad in my book.
Should be the delivery service's issue. That's why you always use insurance.. ALWAYS. The more the value, the more investigating I'm sure.
You're right, but I'm glad these are not my coins . . . I've been left holding the bag before, both when using Postal insurance, and when using private insurance. The post office figures that, if they cannot be proven to have not delivered the package, they should not be on the hook for the value. Their ability to deflect is getting to the point where, unless you pay for Restricted Delivery service, you cannot hold the USPS accountable.
