Hello I have a 1976 mint penny with what I belive is a strikethrough from a thread on the steps of the Lincoln memorial on the coin w/ natural purple toning caused by mint packaging wondering what it's worth and what you guys think of it. Thanks, Jacob
Enlarged it looks too deep and wide to be thread. A possible struck through but also possible damage before it left the Mint.

It looks like damage to me. Note that the area along the lower right-hand edge appears to be pushed upward. If this had been a strikethrough, it wouldn't happen. Chris
I am going to say you have an Uncirculated years set. These are the same coins that get sent out to the general public. They are prone to being damaged due to the fact that they are handled the same. As long as the stay in the cellophane you can surly claim they are Uncirculated. If you had a Proof year set you should not find such coins as they are handled differently.

That is a good question. All it takes is a small pin hole in the cellophane to let contamination in. A sealed pocket will "breath" as temperatures change from hot to cold. Or it could have been carelessly handled at the mint.
Was the coin actually minted as part of a complete set and inside the plastic, or was it minted as most any other coin and then placed into the set?
I'm sorry, Jacob; it wasn't a serious question. The point was that the coin existed out of the plastic prior to being placed into it, and explains when the damage could have occurred.
