Actually, I received them in trade and they're going up for sale on eBay. I don't collect them either, but they sure are purdy to look at for now.

I have three very nice Morgans, but I can't find the images. They were minted in 1879, 1889, and 1921. I also have some Peace dollars and odd and end moderns

I still have the ones my grandfather gave me for Christmas and the ones that I got out of circulation. In the 1950's you could get silver dollars at banks for $1 and I enjoyed spending them (Peace also) rather than paper but kept the ones from my grandfather separate because they were special to me. I could not see paying over face value for US coins but it did not bother me to pay $2 for a denarius. Such was my logic in 1957; such is it today.

Well the rules are quite different when it comes to ancients and I think that's probably the biggest reason you see few people who both collect ancients and US coins as well, or at least who split their time evenly between the two. For one, we are all collecting "details" coins here and even at the higher end of the market, slabs are not(and hopefully never will be) the norm when it comes to ancients, quite different from the US market where most collectors are terrified of buying higher dollar raw coins. On top of that, collecting styles tend to be different as ancients are not quite as clear cut as for instance trying to collect all US denominations for a year or trying to collect all mintmarks or whatever.

I don't think there's any reason you can't collect both ancients and moderns, but I think most people find that they prefer one or the other sooner or later. I've met a few who didn't, but they're in a very small minority in my experience. That said, I don't think anyone here will run you off if you collect both Macrinus and Morgans.

I once had a pre 1964 silver quarter when I was a kid given to me by my grandfather. But I spent it on a gumball. That's the extent of my modern collecting.

I am working on finishing the US type set I started at age 12. I got one of the new run of dansco 7070 albums and will try to fill it up. I am only getting coins from my local coin shops or shows and sticking with circulated examples the way i did as a kid. No coins bought on ebay or online. Not upgrading the coins I bought as a kid either. This is how I make collecting US fun again compared to today's hyper focus on MS XX slabs.

    Call me crazy...

Sorry Ray if I am straying way off topic from your fantastic giveaway. I think that tasty bag of coins will give some lucky collector many hours of fun and learning when they work through identifying them all.

Thanks for doing this Ray. I was a modern guy for a bit but find myself more excited about ancients.

I just started collecting and so fair I love the history behind the coins. My co-worker is on here and is steering me in the right direction. Funny story, I'm already getting in trouble with the wife about the multiple PayPal charges. So far cointalk has been a good resource. @Deacon Ray this is super generous of you. Thank you

Welcome to the forum @MFish! So what got you to join this fine establishment today? Do you collect just ancients or do you collect a little of everything? I hope you have a good night and I hope to hear from you.:)

Welcome to the ancients forum, MFish! There’s nothing like collecting ancient coins. For me it’s not so much about the coins. It’s about connecting with the distant past and holding it in your hand—an ancient coin was touched by many people. It wasn’t just an object. It was something ancient people needed and used everyday to make purchases to sustain their lives.

Always great to see new ancients collectors!

Is it just my impression or have there been an unusual number of new collectors this year?
