I'm on the fence on whether or not to send this 2000 P American Silver Eagle proof off to NGC. My eyes are just not good enough to tell if this might be a PF 70 or a 69... though it is certainly Ultra cameo. If someone knowledgeable can tell me it is likely a 69 I would not bother sending it off but when I look at it side-by-side with a PF70 that I have from NGC, a 2007 coin, this one is to my eyes, and they are sixty-two years old realize, this coin is the equivalent or perhaps superior... then again I could just be projecting pride of ownership and or wishing to arrive at that opinion. Any opinions appreciated... I'm also not a very good photographer so I took a bunch of photos of it at different angles to try to give you a sectional views of the entire coin also in whole
to help (I hope). It is in the original US Mint capsule. Note, there appears to be a tiny spot on the mid reverse but that was on the capsule. [IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG]
    Thanks all

In order to achieve a PF70 from NGC, you need to be the owner of ModernCoinMart.
Normal collectors such as ourselves can't get that grade for any coin, no matter how perfect it looks to you :shifty:

You got a genuine laugh out of the disclaimer. :)

Meaning no offence, only the very finest of coin images have a hope of enabling the observer to discern anything above 66, much less between 69 and 70. These ain't those. :)

I'm keeping this lighthearted because, frankly, the difference between PF69 and PF70 is pretty much empirically proven to be consistently indistinguishable by examining TPG results. PCGS is the most consistent of the TPG's, but all that means in my experience is they get more than two-thirds right. Otherwise, you could easily get a 70 out of a coin that deserved a 69, or a 69 out of a coin that deserved a 70. What we opined regarding the coin, even if it were a slam dunk, would not be of consequence. ASE's are assembly-line cash cows for TPG's, known by them to be majorly purchased by "collectors" who wouldn't know a 69 from a 70 if it kicked them in the crotch, and don't exactly get the consideration extended to an 18th Century Gold Eagle. Junior graders get the ASE's. I've seen axe murder victims in ASE 70 slabs, and flawless Fleur de Coin examples in 69.

Yes, 70's carry a fair premium for this issue. No, I don't believe the stress and extra cost of sending in bullion coins hoping for that 70 (69's won't comp the cost of submission) is an effective use of your time.

Better'n PCGS, don't they embrace the one child philosophy? why would you want to bring another PF70 into this world?

    Love the disclaimer.

But, there just no way for anyone to accurately spot the difference between a PR-69 or 70. But no matter what anyone will tell you (and I'm sure that they already know this), there is a way to up the odds of receiving a 70. The coin needs to be spot free, and it needs to have frost on the entirety of the devices. Not one small spot of the devices can show anything but frost (you must be pretty OCD on this point, it can't be overstated). These both may seem pretty obvious, but this is generally the rule. If your coin fits this criteria, you'll probably have about a 25% shot of landing a 70. I've sent in countless coins that I considered worthy of a 70 and that's about my success rate. It's really a crap shoot no matter how good of a graded you are.

    I'm glad the grading companies can discern between a 69 and a 70 because I sure can't.
