Not sure if this has been mentioned before but sharing. Ken Potter has contracted with Royal Oak Mint to produce 200 of Frank Gasparro's 1977 proposed Liberty Head design struck over the Susan B. Anthony dollar coins. Each will be unique in leaving some of the original left behind on this coin. Wondering what you all think of this effort at $65.00 each? Also wondering myself how he acquired the rights to the design? This was not U.S. Mint property when it was proposed? Or maybe went to his heirs? Each will bear a discreet "copy" worked into each coin.
So if D Carr was the one producing these, you would all scatter like roaches to secure one for your collection. Got it
I would imagine the $65.00 must include gaining rights to the design, the cost of the die and the labor to produce these. But it would seem there really would not be too much profit to be made overall. This was a poor photo anyways, wonder what the finished piece will finally look like. If anyone here decides to get one please post a photo.
Defacing is a crime, isn't it? Some help because I really don't know if this is legal or not. Plus, it is kind of ugly.
I hate to disagree, Rick, but yes, he would. I'm sorry, but many of his non-copies are downright ugly imo.
Gee, I paid about $52 for the 3-medal ANA set with Frank Gasparro's rendition of Libertas Americana on it. The silver medal at 38mm was struck in .999 FS and the set included bronze versions in 38mm and 19mm. I think I'll pass on Potter's junk! Chris
Probably. Because his would actually look good and be well crafted. Not soely because it was a Carr piece. Also, I would never buy a ROM product. They are a low budget, no talent Moonlight Mint wannabe.
Would have been interested until I saw the picture. Granted the picture quality is low but it appears plenty of mints could have done a better job. Copy kills it for me too
I think it's clever and better than the coin underneath. I still wouldn't pay $65 for it. I'm not really into this collecting realm, however.
Defacing coins is perfectly legal. Since this has COPY on it it is also perfectly legal. I do think it is kind of ugly. I never liked that design. Probably because Ken Potter IS ROM. (or so closely related to the firm that for all practical purposes he is ROM.)
