Got this peace dollar and a few other coins at work today (old lady payed with them)

Well I work at a grocery store and I get the usual wheat penny every day.. I get about 2-3 a day, along with some Indian heads here and there.

Well today an older lady comes in and payed for her 3 dollar purchase with:

-1 1776-1976 Eisenhower Dollar
-1 Sacajawea (spelling?) Dollar

and the best,

-1923 Peace Dollar. This thing is seriously in great condition. The ridges along the outside of the coin are perfect. No scratches, nicks, notches, anything. Looks brand new. Here are some pics.









I was just wondering what the Eisenhower and Peace dollar are worth? I know the peace dollar is 90% silver, so it may be worth alot more. But, the Eisenhower seems to be more common and I don't think it's worth much.

The Eisenhower dollar and Sac dollar are worth a dollar each. As for the 1923 peace dollar, the value is somewhere in the range of 13-15 dollars.

It's also too bad that the elderly lady didn't get the full potential of the silver dollar since it sounds like she could really use it....

 

The 23' is a common date coin for the series. I've sold a lot of them on Ebay for around $10. If anyone offers you more, take it!

You never know, if silver keeps going up, it could be worth a lot more someday. Nice coin.

 

One thing. Don't hold the coin as shown in the last photo, as you will leave fingerprints, which reduce it's value. Hold it by the rim only.

 

Lucky find! I never thought about casheiring (is that a word?) as being a good way to come across coins, but I think your experience is a rare one.

 

Actually, It's not that rare. This is the first Peace dollar that I have ever found, but I talked to the manager yesterday about it. She said that once we send the money up to be counted, they usually find 2 or 3 Peace dollars a week, tons of wheat pennies and Indian Heads. Lots of older Nickles and Dimes and some Standing Libery Quarters.

I myself have found about 10 standing liberty's, HUNDREDS of Wheat pennies/indian heads. Barber and Mercury Dimes, even some Buffalo Nickles.

She said the nicest coin she has found was a Draped Bust Large Cent, that someone passed off because they had no idea what it was and thought it was foreign. It says "United States of America", what can that possibly mean!! lol

Thats amazing that they find that much stuff in a week! They all arent terribly rare coins but still!

thats pretty cool that you got a peace dollar! i'd say its worth about $10.75, the melt price of silver. the sacagawea coin is only worth a dollar. the ike dollar is worth about $1.10 becuase thats the last large dollar made, so people are paying a little over face for them. if i were you i'd ask that old lady if she had anymore silver coins, and make an offer for her so she can get more money over face. i didn't know stores like that got so many old coins. do you get to keep all those old coins, or does the manager keep them or roll them up? btw, what year is that sacagawea dollar?

 

Whenever I find old coins, I take them and then put my money in to replace them. So we break even, and I'm not short on my till.

I was going to ask the old lady, but I kinda felt bad doing it. If I ever see her again, I'll make sure to ask her.

If another cashier gets old coins and doesn't keep them.. They will most likely be rolled up and sent to the bank. It depends who's upstairs counting the money.

BTW, I live in Tampa FL and the store is Publix. The biggest chain Grocery store in the Southeast.

Yea my Aunt works a register at CVS. Im always surprised what she finds for my uncle. The otherday she came home with 2 proof silver eagles, 1991 and 1992. And shes grabs about 5 to 10 wheaties everyday, shes found him about 14 mercury dimes in the last 3 months, I dont think she knows the difference when it comes to silver roosevelts and silver washingtons so she hasnt found any of those yet. She found one Indian Head, a nice one I might say. And yesterday she brought him back a nice crisp uncirculated 1934A $20 bill. So she finds alot especially not knowing what to look for.

 

Great idea - lots of elderly people getting RX's these days... wow. We are going to be so busy staking out the ice cream man, drug store, and bank... hmm... where else?

Even when I worked with a cash register I still never found that many good things..
but I didnt work there too long.

I definitely need a Waiter/Cashier job again this summer
(which I plan on doing, being a waiter :kewl: )
