The die crack(s) at the first 3 left stars become a die stage marker for stage 4 of this variety. This example is stage 1 with only the die gouge off the tail feathers, VAM3A1. I call it the poor man's tail bar. :)

When you find a pair of coins like that for sale, the last thing you want to do is say "how much for just the 1879"? ;)

Thanks! It sure was I couldn't believe it when I got them. Kept waiting for the inevitable, "I'm sorry I can't sell you this one" or " there was suppose to be another zero on the end of that price" lol.

Your exactly right lol. I bought the pair since they were sold together and gladly paid the full asking price! Although I do like the 77 anyway, it's in nice shape for a circulated seated dime. Part of me wished the 79 was in that shape but then I thought about how lucky I was to find it the way it was at that price.

Haha. It's already paid itself off. Pass the knowledge.
You should. It's a great segment of numismatic history and also a great chapter of American counterfeit coinage.

Hello, I bought one roll of half dollars and found this Kennedy Half dollar. I thought it was different than the others, I noticed Kennedy has a huge dimple.

    Great pickup!

I find the 79 values interesting. I can't remember seeing a low mintage/rare coin where the difference between all the circulated grades and MS64 is so small. Prices make small linear jumps all the way up the ladder until you hit gem grades.

I'm thinking it could be a lamination error or PMD. But I really couldn't say which.

Usually, lamination errors are caused by hard objects leaving hard edges, but a softer object might leave the smoother, oversized "dimple."

This 1819 Cent, variety N-2 came as part of a lot I bought years ago.
There were about 20 coins in the lot and I paid about $ 110-150 for the lot.
At todays rates this would amount today to about $30 per coin.

The surfaces retain much lustre which my photos are unable to capture.

Your right. It's definitely an interesting year for values for sure. I actually was having a hard time putting an exact value down on this one. I noticed the prices on the sales of the 79s were sometimes inconsistent. I'm thinking my coin is in the very good 08 to 10 range.
