Hello, this is my 1804 cent. I was very glad to find this coin at auction at a price i could afford. This is one of my favourite coins, It has a smooth, dark brown surface, with only a minor rim nick at 4 pm. As per Walter Breen's book on Early US Cents (of which i have managed to find a copy), this is die state C, with a rim break on both obverse and reverse. The more plentiful of the 3 known die states. It is a R-2. I would really appreciate your comments on it net grade. And hopefully it grades higher than i think it does! regards, Eduard
F to VF Overall very weakly struck reverve? Ps.. Ive said it before and Ill say it again , I love these coins.
I am going to say VG10, possibly F12. The only thing that matters is that is one nice coin. I compared this to some VG and F on heritage.
Fine-12. I also think the coin has nice surfaces which is hard to find when it comes to draped bust large cents. Most of these coins on the market today show signs of having been previously scratched, dinged, cleaned, or corroded. Your coin looks pretty much problem free to me. If you don't mind me asking, how much did you pay for that piece?
Well, than you all for your comments and grading opinions. I really have difficulty grading these draped but cents. I guess i am always thinking European vs US grading. We just don't have all of the grading nuances, and intermediate grades. Here a Fine grade is more like your Very Fine, etc. That is why i need you opinions. Gopher, this coin cost me about $ 750 back in 1988. It came from a Stacks auction. I am amazed at the value appreciation these coins have seen over the years. It seems to be almost a factor of 4 for most of my coins since i bought them in the late 80's. Now i wish my roman and german coins would appreciate as much.............. Eduard
