I would pick Steve Jobs or Bill Gates 100%. Elan Musk is a citizen but I don't think he was born in the US.

Elon Musk (not Elan), from Wikipedia:

"Musk was born on June 28, 1971, in Pretoria, Transvaal, South Africa, the son of Maye Musk (née Haldeman), a model and dietician from Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada; and Errol Musk, a South African electromechanical engineer, pilot and sailor. ... His paternal grandmother was British, and he also has Pennsylvania Dutch ancestry. His maternal grandfather was American, from Minnesota. After his parents divorced in 1980, Musk lived mostly with his father in the suburbs of Pretoria."

Clearly, he owes his allegiance to no single country even though he is a US citizen.

General William C. Lee, a native of Dunn, N.C., was one of the pioneer officers in the U.S. Airborne and was instrumental in "writing the book"on early practices and procedures. As such, he became known to many as "The Father of the U.S. Airborne."

My choice is Audie Murphy. A true hero and then an icon.

Audie Leon Murphy was the most decorated American combat soldier of World War II, receiving nearly every military combat award for valor available from the U.S. Army, as well as from France and Belgium for heroism.
Born: June 20, 1925, Kingston, TX
Died: May 28, 1971, Catawba, VA
    Height: 5′ 5″
Children: Terrance Michael Murphy, James Shannon Murphy
Awards: Medal of Honor, Distinguished Service Cross, Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, Croix de Guerre

Audie Murphy. After becoming The United Statas most Decorated Serviceman in World War II, winning 33 Medals including The Medal of Honor. HE was also awarded Medals by several foreign countries. He then went on to star in numerous Films and played on many TV shows. A solid American Citizen!
