About a year and a half ago I bought this house to keep it in the family since we've been here since the 1940s. Today I went into the attic to run some duct work and came across this cool wooden box. I thought the box itself was pretty cool, but it is filled with coins and paper money! I'm about to break it open for a thorough search. I haven't opened any of the bags yet, but the first envelope that I opened had this cool bill in it. I'll post images as I discover what is in here. Take a journey with me. IMG_2492.JPG IMG_2493.JPG

Holy moly! Super cool box too. You know...maybe you ought to rip out all the walls...never know maybe there's a bag of gold in there!

It looks like this is all of the paper money. Pretty standard fare on the small bills, but the 1902 bank of Mobile $10 is really cool, but I know about nothing of paper money. If you have any insight, please share. IMG_2494.JPG IMG_2496.JPG IMG_2495.JPG

Dude, I saw the title before I saw who posted it and thought, "Aw crap, another troll post". ;-)

VERY cool! Glad it happened to you and looking forward to hearing some details!

P.S. Will you sleep tonight or should we expect 2 am updates?

The zip-lock bags and paper rolls look fairly modern.. so I am assuming they are not that old.. I mean hidden a long time

Yep, still a bunch of searching to do, but I know the source. This was part of my grandmothers set that got divided up between my father and his two sisters when she passed in 1997. I've had my fathers portion for years now, but one third was lost in bay st Luis during Katrina. We didn't know where this share went until now.

... and make sure you check for hidden compartments, false bottoms, and mysterious keys and/or maps...

What an awesome find! I guess it was worth doing attic work in the middle of summer (although I would have waited for fall).

That burl wood box is absolutely beautiful, too.

Thumbs up to Grandma for saving it!

Pretty much a silver stack so far, but there's a nice XF 1928 peace dollar in the group. IMG_2506.JPG

That's been one of my fantasies since I was a kid. Something like that or a box of old baseball cards from the '50's and earlier. :) Sure makes doing those chores a little more fun!

That was fun. Numismatically I think my favorite is the 72 Ike, it's a 68 all day. But the real prize in the box was the joy of the find and the memory of roll hunting silver with my grandmother when I was a little kid. I wonder how many of these coins I actually found with her. During the eighties, there was still quite a bit of silver in rolls. I haven't added the rest up yet, but there's $100 face in the quarter rolls in the zip lock. You're not kidding, pretty surreal moment. I was in a place crawling (in about 120 degrees) when I found it. I jumped and bumped my head on the roof joints; worth it.

If I'm reading it right, that national bank note has a BV of $150 in Fine according to Kelly's 6th Edition guide. Only 64 known large notes from that charter (1595) at the time of printing (2008). Your serial has to be one of the highest...possible serial # ranges from 20000-89778 on that note. Will look it up in the database if you want more info.
