So, I am pretty new to coin roll hunting and collecting coins in general and I was wondering which option is better. Buying unsearched rolls of coins off eBay or Amazon, or going to the bank to purchase rolls or coins. Also, how would I make sure a box of coins are circulated coins and not brand new ones
Unsearched on SleazeBay? Yeah! Sure! Get them from the bank at face value. Who cares if they are circulated or new. You're just as likely to find an error or variety coin in new rolls as you would in circulated rolls. Chris
It depends what you are searching for. If you want Wheat Backs, build a relationship with local coin dealers that buy Wheat Cents from the public. Yes, you will pay $0.04 each, but many Wheat cents get bought daily and most dealers do not have the time to search them. Thus, many old, circulated, hard to find dates can be pulled at a very reasonable price. Every now and then an AU or UNC nice coin is in the lot. These are usually sold in 1000 or 5000 count lots. When done searching, they will buy the not needed coins for $0.03 each. I search 1 or 2 bags weekly. I usually pull 100 to 200 coins a week. I found a 1909 S a week ago in F12. If you want errors, than bank rolls is what I search. Buy $25.00 boxes wrapped by the armored truck services. Every now and then I get lucky and can buy the $50.00 bags from the coin counting machines. These produce the best finds.
Welcome to Coin Talk. Buying "unsearched rolls" on eBay...ARE they unsearched? Don't know anything about Amazon...never been to the site. Rolls are probably like the "unsearched rolls" as on Ebay. Cost of the rolls on Ebay or other sites will probably be more than face value. I would obtain rolls from banks at face value. Just don't go to my home bank...they will not get you any rolls that you request. Again, welcome.
"Who cares if they are circulated or new." I DO. I have tried to get NEW 2017-P cent rolls from my bank for 2 or 3 months but they will not get them for me. I need to put my money into another bank.
I'm just glad this gets brought up so often. Ask yourself this: if a person is pushing pennies on ebay, making dozens of cents in profit, would they really be sending out rolls that might have a highly valuable coin? The truth of it is, the majority of unsearched rolls on ebay are unethical individuals who are probably just looking for a way to dump their searched rolls.
When I search rolls and have leftovers, sometime I send them. Have used SBA dollars to make small purchases. Have had the SBA's for ages and wanted to get rid of them. Used them last night to tip waitress. Small dollars, searched halves, uncirculated quarter rolls (used to join coin club), anything you need cash money to do.
Who cares what you can or can't do! You're not the OP. If you don't like the policies of your bank, then you are free to change banks. Chris
Hi, Cue. "Who cares what you can do or not do!" Certainly, not somebody as d#*b as you are! I have NEVER been able to understand a comment made by you!! A thousand comedians out of work and you are trying to be funny. You're not the OP either but you act like you are where ever you are. You need to go VAM, or CAM, or CAP, or VAP or what ever it is you do. "Best Answer", my foot. I will work with my bank, no help needed from you!! And don't inform me what to do. I will run my life and you run your "old" single life.
I'm not trying to be funny. I'm dead serious. You need an attitude adjustment. Just because your bank wouldn't provide you with boxes of 2017-P cents so you could sell them for a profit is no reason for you to whine about it on this thread. Chris
Welcome OP! When first started in this hobby I believe my first, maybe second, was a batch of 'Unsearched' rolls from ebay. I also did the coin roll hunting from my bank for a while. Both seemed like cheap ways into the hobby, especially as someone who did not have a strong interest or specialty. With a couples years of collecting under my belt, I will give you some suggestions. 'Unsearched' rolls from ebay/amazon are never un-searched. Coin roll searching, where you buy rolls at face from your bank is a great way to start a collection on the cheap, just built a relationship with the head teller or whomever does the coin ordering. There are endless things to search for in all denominations. I made sure at least one bank I belonged too had a coin counting machine I could use for free so I could dump the coins with no hassle. I searched every denomination, but eventually grew tired and lost interest. The pick up and return process was a pain, and the 'pay-off' was just not that high. I quickly got past the beginner stage of the hobbt, found a couple areas to specialize, and have never looked back. The only other advice I have is to enjoy yourself!!!
Hi, Cue. Who is whining, I stating fact... What thread then? Like has been indicated, you seem to know everything there is to know about coins, silver and gold, coin sites, coin machines, the creator of this site, all the employees and families of this site, and whatever else there is to know. Go take your meds and rest now.
I have never claimed to know everything, but it doesn't take me too long to know when I am talking to an idiot. Bye! Chris
First @Alexander Sohn welcome! I CRH and have an account at a couple banks just to spread my bases and get a variety (with less chance of getting my returns back). Also, remember to bring chocolate for the ladies. It goes a long way. You'll find them more willing to help and even hold onto stuff for you if you build a relationship with them. If you are hunting for older coins ask for customer wrapped rolls. That's where I've found most of my gems. Coin terminal wrapped (Loomis, string, etc) will have some good stuff too, but I've found a lot of would-have-been-great coins that were damaged by their machines. If you're looking for UNC then you need to ask the teller for new "fed" (it irks me because they're not from the fed, but that's what they know them as) rolls of new coins. I get them often here in Baltimore from the philly mint. Some banks charge to sort coins now and some people buy the paper wrappers from the dollar store to rewrap, but I just go through the roll and use the same paper to send them back in. You can carefully use a pocket knife to unroll the terminal rolls crimped end and just fold it back when repacked. Most banks will order you boxes of anything you want upon request and I've heard of some charging fees per roll, but it is always better than buying "unsearched rolls" on the bay. Trust me. I spent a rack on an unsearched roll of BU Peace dollars, a roll of mercury dimes and 5 rolls of wheaties. After I pulled the ones I wanted out it took A LOT of work to only be $200 upside down on the deal. It just ain't worth it. It's like buying a scratch off that deep down inside you know was already scratched and re coated somehow, no matter how genuine it looks. Bad investment. If it's silver you're looking for go the half dollar route. I don't do boxes (as often as many on here) but ask the tellers at the bank if they have any loose in their till. Once or twice a month that gets me one or two pices of silver at .50 a piece. There are some silver dimes and quarters still out there, but that's a tough grind. Figure out what you want to get out of CRH and go for it. You can always switch it up because it's your game. The most important thing is to have fun. I look forward to seeing what you find out there! @u812? Ok...so there are a few bloated heads on here but @cpm9ball isn't one of them. I've gained much insight from him and think all he was trying to say is dont hijack someone's thread with your issue. Search eBay for unc lmc and you'll pay a premium, but you'll have what you want. I see adds for them in coinworld as well.
