I like to put on a historical documentary or period piece show from the eras of recent purchases and peruse the collection while viewing stories of the time. I also read biographies/history books that coincide with whatever type I'm into at the time to immerse myself in the history.
If the coin is drop dead gorgeous I just stare at it, failing to comprehend that I own it. For my more beat up coins, I like to image where it has been. If it is low grade coin, I imagine that some kid worked for days to earn it or maybe a president kept it as a lucky token and rubbed it when he was stressed. When I look at my entire collection, I put on some classy music.
As a old newbie, I first put my meager collection in 2x2's in the blue plastic coin boxes with some info written on the flips. The more interesting ones I put into coin pages and put additional info on a typed sheet of paper that accompanied each coin page. Now I am in the process of moving all of my coins from the boxes to binders. This way I can look at them more and display them to people.
I like to put on some slow music, like - Barry White & light about 7 scented candles. Nip on some of Grandpas cough medicine, caress & whisper sweet nothings to my box of 20.........

I've been thinking of starting a thread just like this. Thanks for doing it. I don't see the point of having my coins locked away where I can't enjoy them, or having to dig them out to look at them. I have been photographing the coins and putting them on a network-attached storage device (NAS) - basically a big disk drive on my home network. It supports remote access from my iPhone so I can see any photo at any time wherever I am. This comes in handy on a visit to the LCS if I want to show them something. I have also been exploring animating the images. (See the thread Animation and Coin Photography or Which US Coin has the best design? if you haven't been inundated with them yet.) I wrote a little program that shows these animated images on both of my desktop monitors, like this: The images are displayed in random order for 15 seconds each, and when each one has been displayed, shows them all over again in a new sequence. I haven't photographed everything, but I'm getting there. Fifteen seconds is enough time for me to appreciate the 3-D effect of the moving images and take a good look at the coin. For me this works great! It's as if someone were handing me each of my coins and suggesting I take a close look. There is as much detail as if I had a loupe and moved the coin in hand. By the way, between the keyboard and the monitors there are actual coins - my 1950 proof birth year set. To the left of the picture is a 1917 year set for my parents' birth year. These always deserve to be seen. I enjoy tracking down really nice coins I enjoy photographing them I like figuring out how to animate them to show the in-hand look Writing the software to straighten, crop, and animate the photos is fun Writing the on-screen displayer was also fun And I like to look at the pictures Edit: How could I fail to say how much CoinTalk adds to the enjoyment!
I give my new finds to my grandbabies. 6,8,11. When we get together i tell them about coins that are on coin talk and new things about coins. They bring there books out and we add what we can. 6yr old has the bestest collection cuz her book is full. She fills her with the shinest pennies and doesn't want any dirty ones. I gave her some magnetic canadian pennies and now she's rich cuz the boys don't have any. The boys are letting her run with it. She shows them to all. Does the magnet trick. Kids love coins
That's awesome. I work on a dual monitor set up as well and would love to have my collection come up while I'm scanning and doing paperwork. Very cool.
Thanks for the great thread idea. These threads let us novice chime right in while knowing very little abount coins.

It all gets confusing at times......drives me to drink. I find I have bought the same coin twice, or 3 times? Then I think I should sell some of the extras. Then I think about having another drink. Uh, what were we talking about?
