I guess you know a coin is pretty rare when you haven't even seen a picture of one before. I have only been collecting ancients for a few years, but this is the first I have seen this coin. Quite nice, and quite the score.

I just met Curtis for the first time at the shop a few weeks ago. Super kind and knowledgeable man to talk to. I hope to have reason (and money, ha) to stop by and see him again soon.

The first photo I ever saw of this type was in Michael Grant's Roman Imperial Money about a dozen years ago or so. Ever since, it has been a dream coin of mine. I never thought I'd see one go up for auction, let alone be able to win it.

As for Curtis Clay, he has been of immense help to me over the years, offering critiques and sound advise. He has always been kind and generous with his knowledge.

I am happy that you were able to get it. I have an irrational fear that since I can not possibly win all of the really nice coins out there, that they are going to cold and unloving homes of super wealthy collectors who then lock them away and laugh.

I liked my initial meeting with Curtis Clay. He was very fun to talk to.

Another great coin David. Like most of us I have never seen the type before. I always look at these postings as a learning tool. Can you tell us how the year it was minted was determined? It has no titles on it that we would use to pin down a time period.

@David Atherton , I was enjoying your OP coin again... WELL done! I know you are being like the Hunt Brothers, but cornering the Flavian Coin market. :D

I would like to post my poorly pictured (I will redo) supposedly RARE Vespasian. Perhaps, with your expertise, you could comment on its rarity or significance? (I do not focus on the Empire, but enjoy cool coins for interesting characters in history...)

Well, let me put it to you this way - it's rare enough I don't have that exact variant of the type. It's significant enough that I would pay good money to have one.

And I've been collecting Flavian silver since 2003.

Pricing a rare piece like this is very tricky. In a well publicised auction with strong bidding a good provenanced piece well fetch a hefty sum (certainly over four figures). On eBay, not so much.
