Yes the copper would probably warp the aluminum EXCEPT the surface of the aluminun has a the face of a tool steel die backing it up that keeps the the aluminum from warping. Also the edge of the die is only pressing down on the rim of the coin which crushes it resulting in the concave edge on the coin you can see in the edge picture of the coin above. The aluminum fits into that concavity (with pressure) holding the coin in place so it can't fall out or rotate. (That concave edge is also another feature that usually identifies a coin removed from an encasement.)

Thanks to all of you for all your time in explaining the process and illustrating how this deformity was created. I really do appreciate the effort in providing this clear and convincing evidence.

In my opinion the verdict is in: It was removed from a good luck holder.

Just some background for you guys... I bought the coin at a local shop and paid 5 bucks for it. The coin was labeled overstruck. I was curious so I had to get it and then post it on here. Glad to know that you can't trust everything on a coin flip. I'm going to try and return it today.

    Thanks again,

    Valpo

In a way the label is correct. It was overstruck, just with a different type of die.
I would keep it. It's a fun coin.

Not all Coin Shop owners are Error Coin experts. Some have no knowledge of Mint Errors. All they care about is making the $$$
