This is why I tend to stress using correct terms, sloppy language leads to confusion as in this tread with people thinking there are 1982 cents made of plated zinc. brass, copper, and bronze. Because they find different price guides that list prices for each of these different compositions (Not more than two of them in any given guide though.) and then it adds to the confusion when they compare different guides that call the compositions different things.

And it can take a LONG time to clear up misconceptions.

I must have read something that was off a bit on a coin websight, as far as I know everything said is true here but in 1982 there were, I believe 40 Bronze pennies made that were a mistake. The 1982D (small) is a big deal and at auction one of these has sold for over a million. Only one coin has surfaced. So they that collect are definately looking for the others. Ill have to do more searching.

A whole lotta wrong by PCGS there.

    (1) There is no bronze 1982 penny which has been found anywhere AFAIK.

    (a) There is a brass penny with 95% copper and 5% zinc. Normal folks usually call these copper.

    (b) There is also a copper-plated brass penny where the brass is 97.5% zinc and only 2.5% copper (note that this combination is STILL brass - just with different ratios). Normal folks usually call these zinc.

But no bronze. Any bronze cents which may have been made after 1962 would have been accidents and probably worth a pretty penny. ;)

    (2) The mint most assuredly did not make the exact same number of small date copper cents in Philadelphia as it made small date zinc cents in Philadelphia as those two links indicate under "Mintage." I think that most folks would say that the small date zinc cents are harder to find and therefore it stands to reason that fewer were made (although why, I have no idea).

Given all that, I have no faith in any of the other information in those two links from PCGS.

The only "error" bronze (actually brass) cents that could have been made in 1982 would have been Denver small dates. NO ONE knows how many might have been made, because if they were to exist they would be a error not something deliberate so it would be impossible to put a definite number to them. Until last year no such coin was known to exist. Now there is one known. Do more exist? They might, or this may be the only one.

In 1982 the copper plated cent was pure copper over pure zinc. The overall composition was 97.5 copper 2.5% zinc. In 1983 or 84 they added a very small amount of copper to the zinc core because it made the copper plating bond better.

Interesting. Did not know that, but I will take your word for it and stand corrected. Even better reason to call those "zinc cents."

I made the scale that someone recomended for the time being and it worked perfect.
I do have a 1982d penny that when I weighed it, there was no doubt, it weiged a lot more than the other penny on the other end. My big question is, ...is the 8 large or small...the 2 has error so im not sure. Anyways..ill upload a pic of it.
