Another thread showed the idea of video of ancient coins so I had to try it. I will be trying more someday - hopefully better. Who else has tried this?
Alright! I haven't, that requires a good cam, focusing on audio though. Btw, is that you shaking or the camera?
I know @Ancientnoob has. In addition to showing the coin he also briefly explains about them (not sure if he does for all of his coin videos though).
i've tried this but it was a huge FAIL. lighting was poor and the resolution of my camera didn't help. i'm getting a new phone/camera this weekend, i may give it a shot. yeah, @Ancientnoob has several of these on youtube.
I was just thinking, on those home shopping shows they use a rotating stand, propped up, to showcase somethings. Maybe you can make something similar, or but a cheap on on amazon for $15.
If you have the camera/phone on a stand it will be easier to keep the movement steady. You could use both hands, perhaps propping your elbows on the table for stability. A Gorillapod would work well.
My trial is on my regular camera stand using my full frame dslr. The image is much reduced for posting. The movement is mine. I was trying to wiggle the coin to show the play of light on the surface but it may requite practice to be smooth.
I like it. It shows off the colors and surface of the coin in a way that complements a still photo. I think a narrative attribution and interesting facts about the coin would be good too.
Oh my gosh! That has to be one of the COOLEST coins I have ever seen in my life! And you could not get the full effect without the video! Great job. And....wanna sell or trade it?! Seriously.
Excellent. This was once discussed years ago on another board, but the technology to record, upload, store and retrieve (i.e. view) videos was considered too cumbersome. It's a great way to put life into a coin. Static photos cannot capture a coin the way our eye does. In fact, many times they show flaws that you can only see in the photo. The video is superior in conveying the actual look of a coin.
Sure. First someone has to buy the coins I'm trying to sell and then the few thousand I don't plan on selling and then the ones in my top hundred list that rank below this one (at least 95 - maybe 98). Then you can get on the list of people who told me they wished they bought it when they saw it on VCoins of asked if it was for sale when I posted it as my favorite coin of 2016. In a fantasy, I wonder what I would say to a trade for an EID MAR. Are my principles that strong? In fact, I wonder when I will find another one like this from the bag full that the mint in Constantinople may have overstruck that day. That is the problem with ancients. The turn of a shovel or the death of an old collector can make 'unique' into 'just another'. When I see another, I plan on being at least an underbidder.
Crap! And here I was hoping you might say, 'yea, its not very interesting to me, I'll trade it for a few Severan Denarii'. I wouldnt trade it for an EID MAR. I really wouldnt. I dont like silver and dont like gold. Anyway, this coin blows my mind. If I owned it I would say it would be one of the best coins in my collection. But that is why ancients are so cool. We all see and appreciate different things. Its not like we are simply filling a date or mintmark.
If it makes you feel any better, the coin is improvable. The reverse is boring with a very faint trace of the undertype (LAETITIA). I sincerely believe the chance is good that the coin was made along with a few/dozen/hundred others and there is a chance you will find the similar coin overstruck on a Didius Julianus (we may as well reach for the stars - a Didius Julianus as with XLII cut in the flan before the last strike) and that coin may be in some grandpa's collection waiting for the kids to dump them on some dealer at a show. We never know. That is why the #1 item on my want list is 'something I did not know existed'.
I tried a bit with my old camera out on my deck, came out ok. I was trying to make some animated gif files, these should probably be edited around a bit.
Uh, does this work? I dont know. Using my sons Youtube account. I buy very little for my collection. These are just the ones I have bought this year (I think, I dont know). Just things that 'trip my trigger' and for no other reason. I recall the other thread that prompted this, people didn't like the music. I was listening to some Alan Parsons right before this, so I hit 'pause' before I took the video! I imagine that going forward we will be posting our treasures in video and not still shots. Just simple evolution.
