I'm not very good at drawing, especially from scratch, so I made my design from images I found on the interent.

What do you guys think? It depects a Union soldier, and a Confederate soldier, aswell as the White House as it appeared in 1860, to commemorate Lincoln presiding over the country in the time of great doubt.

Also, has anyone else made a design like this on the computer? I just made mine for fun, but has anyone tried sending some designs in?

For you guys with PhotoShop, you could do in 5 minutes what it took me an hour to do in MS Paint. Still, it's something to pass the time when bored.

Give me a couple of months with Photoshop, and I might be able to draw stick people well enough that you can tell what they are. LOL

I guess if the south would have won Jefferson Davis would be on the 1 cent coin and five dollar bill:D The white house would be in Richmond Va
The 50 dollar bill would have Robert E Lee instead of Ulysses Grant :goofer:

Lets all be happy that didn't happen, although from a practicle POV, there was no way for the South to win. The North often fought with one hand behind their back. Once the gloves came off, the industrial might of the free labor system was crushing.

Come now, we all know its not as simple as that. That is a 5th grade textbook's explanation of the Civil War. And if you call using incompetent generals "fighting with one hand behind their back," then good for you!

I'm just kidding. Its a damn good thing the North did win.

Not bad, BigH, but I don't think we will ever see a newly minted coin with the Confederate flag on it.
It would not sit well with many people.

I thought of that myself, but there is also a Union soldier depicted aswell as as the 23 star flag of the Union. I'm far from a Confederate sympathizer, but I don't see why we can't depict historical events on the reverse of our coinage. The Confederacy isn't something to be proud of, but it's certainly not something we should forget.

P.S., I'm going to make one to commemorate Lincoln's early life in Kentucky soon. It will depict young Lincoln in front of his modest log cabin.

You don't think those folks at the Jena 6 march would approve of his design?;)

Well, maybe a battlefield design would be less offensive? I can see how a lot of people would see the Confederate flag, and throw all common sense to the wind.

Regardless, this design should not offend anyone.

Well, my history was wrong. I checked, and he moved from Kentucky at age 7 in 1816. :goofer: I'll have to change the wording on that one a bit...

    Interesting concept BigH,

Would be kind of tight on a cent though - maybe a large cent?

As for the Confederate flag thing I have no problem with it. Coins are history, after all, and that was a pretty crucial time of our history.

Of course I'd probably change the obverse as well. Get rid of Lincoln (sorry Abe but 100 years is long enough). Bring back the Flying Eagle. Now THAT'S American!

Exactly, in this era of super PC, anything uncomfortable to any group is whitewashed completely out of existance.

Here's a new design. It's not related to the Lincoln cent, but I think it would make a nice silver commemorative half. It's a bit of a rough design, because I think it needs something else. No reverse design yet.

Yeah, I thought of that too. I wanted to make them the same size, but I couldn't find a nice picture of a Union soldier with the flag. If I actually drew the design on pen and paper, rather than splicing together already existing images, I would make both flags equal.

By the way, I wanted to mention that I got the idea for that last one for a thread I read earlier today where someone asked why there wasn't a Martin Luther King commemorative. Thought it was a good idea.

Maybe I'll try to print one of these out and use tracing paper to get them in black and white. They look pretty bad with all the different colors.

Hmm my honest opinion is that the reverse design would be awesome but the obverse looks kind of dumb to me. it looks like hes yelling at the statue
