They could have been contracted to steal this, and they didn't melt it, they just handed it over and took their cut.
I find it amazing that 4 guys aged between 18 and 20 were able to steal such a valuable item from a museum.
It Almost certainly was insured. As far as another one I don't even think they legally could back date one like that. They could maybe make a new one for this year but it won't have the same feel to it at this point since Perth has done some too and actually outdid them I believe
They really don't know what happened to the coin. How times have changed. The cops in the Texas town I grew up in would have had the robbers begging to tell in about 15 minutes.
They were almost certainly hired for that job. That coin was gone in a day or two. Either a buyer wanted the actual coin or it was melted to fund the enemies of the civilized world. From a theft standpoint that is one of the dumbest targets you could randomly pick given the size, weight, and being unique.
Despite being unique, it was fungible, so I don't think it was random at all . . . Like, you, I also think someone higher up the food chain laid out the theft, step by step, and hired the thieves for a cut of the take.
