So I am just wondering if there has ever been discovered a Kennedy half dollar struck on a 90% with the date of 1965? Anyone know what to look for if so? Specs are greatly appreciated!

Yes. On .400 silver halves from 1965-1970 the rim you can see dark grey in between two silver sides. .900 is solid silver. If thats not enough, .400 weighs 11.5g +/- a few milligrams. .900 is 12.5g. If it weighs 12.5 definitely send it in for professional analysis. Also, they minted .900 silver coins dated 1964 in 1965 also.

Thank you too man I appreciate this!! I'll let you know if I foundation 90% 1965. Looks like the edge could be a 90% because it's clean silver color. Not one hint of dark :)

Interesting. Keep me updated, or post pictures. This happened on dimes and quarters too so look out for them.

So it weighed like a 40%er 11.6 grams. Unfortunately. But man that was a great feeling!!! Here's why I got so darn excited, you will see why. The 1964 is on the left, the 65 on the right IMG_1671.JPG IMG_1665.JPG IMG_1668.JPG IMG_1672.JPG
But now that I am able to see the differences in the two you notice the 40%er is slightly thicker.

It is NOT uncommon for cladding to get stretched over the entire edge of a blank during the blanking process. Unusual but not uncommon.

The edge doesn't tell you anything.

I never trust the edge. When new the 20%silver 80% copper core is almost the same color as the 80% silver 20% copper outer layers. If the edge doesn't get a lot of handling it won't darken that much and will tend to remain about the same color. If it does receive a lot of handling the center can darker quite a bit and start looking a lot like a coppernickel clad. Always use weight to tell 90% silver from 40%, and specific gravity, and sometimes the tissue test, to tell 40% from coppernickel (Weight is not conclusive on 40%/coppernickel)

Yeah, I know lol. It's okay. If anything it's still 40% silver, maybe not a priceless coin but the feeling of the potential pricelessness was an amazing feeling. I couldn't imagine how I would have felt if it had been what I thought it had been. Definitely enough to keep me going. I might feel a little stupid but hey, the feeling of stupid basically helped me learn! That's why I think it's pointless to beat yourself up about something you thought could be a deal. It kinda is a big deal that you know more than most people, and the fact of knowing can make you money in this hobby, just makes that feeling of stupid that much more worthwhile. I thank self stupidity everyday for helping me learn. It is the first feeling you feel when you have learned something :) thanks for your guyses feed back and support and helping me learn from this.

Here is a song that kind of represents what is coin people have to go through to learn. Might make you laugh haha
