He was born in (now) Bulgaria. Emperor Galerius was his uncle who guided his army career. After Licinius became an Emperor in 308, Maximinus and Constantine were appointed his "sons". Maximinus allied with an usurper Maxentius in Italy, then, after his army lost a big battle with Licinus's army, Maxentius fled and later died either to "despair or poison".
