Being new to the world of coin collecting, I'm very suspicious of some coins I found on ebay.

That is one of the auctions. I'm wondering if these are authentic ancient Roman coins or not because $2.00 seems to be very cheap to me for ancient coins that are supposedly dated in BC.

That is the other auction from the same seller. I'm also wondering about those coins as well because...well $5 also seems very cheap for when they date the coins. Can anyone tell me if these seem to be authentic or just replicas? And if they are authentic, are they worth that much money? Has anyone here purchased something from this seller before?

I will make no comment about the particular seller - but rather about these types of auctions in general.

The key word one must pay attention to is "uncleaned". These are coins that have been found buried in the ground and are still many times lumped together in one large lump. They can be totally covered and encrusted with almost any type of sediment. They are also often completely corroded and unrecoginizable as coins at all. Perhaps the best way to describe these type of auctions is to use the old saying - buying a pig in a poke. You may as well buy coins that someone offers like this -

" Inside this bag is a coin. You cannot see this coin before buying it. It might be worth a great deal - then again it might be worth absolutely nothing. But for just $5 - you get the chance to find out !! "

How many of those auctions would you participate in ?

I've had fairly good luck with these auctions. Quite often these are the Broken and Holed coins but you never know I've gotten some really good pieces out of these Auctions.

Like what? I'd like to see some. The adventurer in me has always wanted to give this a try. Maybe you could mention some of the good dealers you've bought from too.

I'm gonna have to crank a couple of wheels upstairs that haven't been greased in a while to remember those sellers.
I find that half the joy of the horde coins is cleaning to see what you got, and if you got young one to share with thats even better. The coins I have average around 1500 Yrs old, a couple as old as 1700 yrs old if I had a good camera to do it with I would post some Pictures and I've learned some good clean the caked on gunk tricks that don't damage the coins if they are monitered closely like using an electric current. of course some of the coins are little more than Flacky metal and rust but some come out beautifully. if your gonna try it get at least 10 to 20 coins to start. alot of these coins are stuff sold of from museums for funds and because they don't have the time or manpower to clean all the coins.
Buy a few and try it you may not find any great valuable treasure but you will get some enjoyment from it and the history bug will bite.

Did you know that some Roman soilders use to tie a coin with a hole in it to their armour for protection.

    Ebay

In defense of ebay, there really are some great buys on there. I am a powerseller (Bucky1981) and I've recently started selling coins. With ebay you have the security of buyer protection if you take advantage of it. If there is any kind of problem seller or bidder it can be resolved.
To those who doubt it, I challenge you to give it a chance. Just be sure to check the person's feedback and read the auctions thoroughly.

I've bought some coins off eBay and I've never really had a problem. I just usually make sure the pictures posted are of the item I'm buying and that the seller has a very high overall possitive rating. As for big lots of "unsearched" coins, I never trust those. It would be so easy to say "unsearched" when in reality.... You catch my drift.

Why do you need a Paypal account ? I have never - EVER - seen any seller on ebay that refused to accept Money Ordrs.

I don't accept money orders or any payment by snail mail anymore... Had too many not show up.

Seems every coin I'm interested in doesn't take money orders. Plus I thought the convenience of shopping AT HOME meant I didn't have to leave to get a stupid money order or click to yet another site ?

I have bought and sold on eBay since '97 I think, and have had very minor or rare problems. I don't buy from anyone who has bad feedback rating. Always be sure to check that. I am not sure why you can't get a PP acct. - thought it was quite easy to do. I have never had problems with PP either.

Been on ebay a while now, also use Paypal.
Very few, if any major problems at all. Sometimes a no-payer, but ebays NPB program and fee recovery is pretty simple. As a buyer, I have not yet had a deal go totally bad (*knocking wood*).

I have never had a bad coin transaction on Ebay. I am pretty careful with them and follow certain rules I have made for myself including carefully looking at feedback, requiring good images, asking questions, favoring sellers I know, etc.

I think I am in the process of a bad transaction on a used computer part purchase, though, but it is my own fault for violating my own Ebay rules. Hindsight is 20/20, though.
