Is this an error or just junk

    What happened to this coin: either it got chewed up by being him the ground or the coin probably got damaged, someone left it in water(or something corrosive) and the zinc started to rot away. Totally understand why you would maybe think this is a defective plantchet. thats if this is a zinc penny. If it's 1983 or anything after 1983 it's zinc.

    Yes..that is PMD.... those zincolns get damaged really easy....

    I stand corrected. I usually call such a coin a "spender," but I don't think this one qualifies.
