Anyone had dealings with this grading company? Are they reputable? Will coin value be harmed? Will it make the coin harder to sell? Thank you.
Yes the market shows that their coins generally sell for less than PCGS or NGC coins in the same grades.
It's only harder to sell if you deal primarily on eBay, since they're banned from eBay, if I recall properly. Beyond that, buyers will usually say SEGS overgrades by 1.5-2 grades, and typically their DMPL is treated like PL. Sellers, of course, will argue that SEGS only overgrades by 0.5-1 grade, with the suffix being accurate.
Not banned on eBay but can't show grades or have grades listed in the title as they aren't one of the 4 grading companies eBay approved.
Exercise caution and rely on your own wisdom and experience when dealing with coins graded by this company.
Wasn't there just a thread on SEGS and their not honoring their guarantee, or something to that effect?
There are some really nice coins in SEGS holders. I would want to see the coin in hand or know I can return it before buying it.
Yes, they are. In fact, they still set up at major coin shows. I bought a R.6 Morgan in a SEGS MS63 holder at a show. It crossed at PCGS. Same grade. MS63. Other than that I've only bought a few Fine12-15 graded Large Cents in SEGS holders. They were a bit green, though...
I don't mind SEGS. I don't seek them out and I only have one coin graded by them. Would I contemplate sending my raw coins to be graded by them? Not a chance. I personally think I would be no better off than throwing them into my own homemade slabs. In fact I might be better off because I would save the money on postage and submission fees. If you do send your coins in, don't expect to get PCGS or NGC or even ANACS prices for them when it comes time to sell. Here is a SEGS MS-65 Type 1 Buffalo I bought last year. I bought it mostly because of the price and the almost terminal die state of the obverse and reverse dies. The reverse die has a fantastic die break that bisects the bison's rear leg. Personally I think the coin would grade in the 63 - 64 neighborhood and I paid $29.99 for it. The light areas with darker halos around them are from a fairly large scratch on the plastic and are not on the coin.
From an undated article... https://www.fleur-de-coin.com/articles/grading-companies The final tally of the survey indicated that no grading service was ranked overall as "outstanding," but one company was listed as "unacceptable." Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) and Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) were both listed overall as "superior," the second highest ranking on the scale. Accu-Grade (ACG) was listed overall as "unacceptable," the lowest-ranking category on the scale. ANACS and Independent Coin Grading Company (ICG) were ranked overall as "average." PCI Coin Grading Service (PCI) and Sovereign Entities Grading Service (SEGS) were ranked overall as "poor."
Coins they have graded for me have been graded accurately. It has been a number of years since I sent any to Larry because the market only recognizes two grading services. NGC and PCGS.
