I love these little "bottle caps". Have actually never had one, though I've come close to buying them several times. Also like the mosaic you used in your poster. Agree with @Mat that the elephant one is special.
There is quite a variety in the style and amount of the protrusions. How were the flans made? Seleukos IV AE20 Antiochus IV AE14 Apollo Demetrius I AE15 (my favorite cap) Antiochus VI AE21
Lovely 'bottle-caps' everyone!! I finally grabbed one off FORVM auctions: Type: Greek Region: SELEUCID KINGDOM Issuer: Seleucus IV Philopator Date Ruled: 187-175 BC Metal: Bronze Denomination: Serrated AE20 Struck / Cast: struck Date Struck: BC 187-175 Diameter: 20 mm Weight: 7.552 g
They were cast that way from the mint, purely stylistic choice I believe. Alexander III Antiochus VI Demetrios I Seleucus IV Seleucus IV
Excellent coins everyone. Ray, your presentations are always top notch! I need more Seleukid bronzes in my collection. I've mainly collecting tets so far. This is my only serrate:
At the time I knew next to nothing about ancients. But I liked the "bottle-cap" look and the starting price didnt seem as overwhelming as the majority of Greek coins in that sale.
I've got one. I knew it's seleucid but that's about it. I'll dig it out this afternoon and photograph it. Maybe I can get some help attributing it.
WOW, @Meander , that looks STRAIGHT OFF A BOTTLE OF COKE! Well done, beautiful coin! I do not have a Seleukid coke bottle cap, but I do have a MEANDER: RI Augustus 27BC-AD14 Æ20 5.5g 12h Apameia Phrygia Magistrate Attalos c 15BC Two corn-ears above maeander pattern RPC I, 3125 SCARCE gyped out of the @John Anthony collection
