How about this one @dougsmit ?? It's certainly rare and EXPENSIVE LOL Magnentius Æ Centenionalis. DN MAG MAG–NENTIVS AVG, bare-headed bust right, wearing imperial mantle / GLORIA ROMANORVM, Emporor dominating captive, standing right; N in right field. RIC -. 4.17g, 20mm, 10h.
i was just lookint today at one with the reverse has him on a horse getting ready to spear a dude..now i've brought one, i'm finding all kinds smh
No. You of all people would know the answer! RIC 133 Arles is a very ordinary lookiing FH2 falling horseman BUT struck in the name of Magnentius. The one in the RIC plates is high grade. The one shown on Wildwinds is pretty awful. There was one in the Bridgnorth hoard. Photo? My coin of Decentius does not count because it is obviously barbarous. It does not copy a known original but was probably just a mule made by someone who had no idea what they were doing. It is what it is except when it is not. The Magnentius coins with a horseman riding down men on the ground are common. The rare ones have the reverse very common for Constantius II where the soldier on foot is killing the horseman. The $4k coin is rare and desirable. $4k desirable? I do not know how many of them exist. Just because some dealer thinks they can get several thousand dollars for a coin does not make it 'worth' that. It just shows that there are many people who will pay very high prices for very high grade coins and completely ignore what might be termed decent mid-grade items that sell for 1/100th the price. To be worth $4k, I would expect a late Roman coin to be very different and not just a small matter of number or placement of captives. How the wealth spend their coin budget is no concern of mine. High grade coins are most definitely worth more than low grade ones. How much more? Sheldon (inventor of the 1-70 grading system) said VF35 was half of MS70. Current standards make it quite a bit more. 10x, probably; 100x? --- I'll take my common rider from Bargain Bin and the $3940 change. For the record, if you want a bit less common Gloria Romanorum rider spearing coin, don't go for the Magnentius but look for the Constantius II version. RP is Rome.
how do you figure out which is the rarest type for Magnentius? I would have thought it was from Siscia, a mint he only controlled for about a month.
I was affraid me posting would give it away lol I thought maybe you found one at the last show. You said you found a FH so I thought you got lucky
UPDATE: whew! it finally came in and here it is peeps(i won't start another thread since i already did)
Nice @gregarious ! Since I didn't at the first time here's my Magnentius: Magentius, AD 350-353 AE, 23mm, 4.72g; 12h Obv.: [DN MAGEN]-TIVS PF A[VG] Rev.: [SAL]VS DD NN A[VG ET CAAES]; Large Chi-Rho with A to left, W right The damaged flan obliterated the mint mark. I consider usurpers to be the losers.
