Celebrating the 4th of July by purchasing a coin of the man who ended the Republic.

After years of looking, I thought it was the right coin at the right time. I also love irony.

If I can take a better picture I will, right now I am using the dealer photo.

    WOW!!!

That's a gorgeous example, far, far superior to my budget denarius:

Wow! That's a nice example. I'm embarrassed to show mine. Naw. I'll show it anyways:

    Very nice, 4to2!!

I bought a couple in my first months of collecting, before realizing that a gazillion coins were auctioned every month and that there would almost certainly be another coin around the corner if I missed a current target. That said, these aren't too shabby :)

Great coin @4to2centBC and wonderful coins all.

Mine is off centre but I still love it. It also has a very nice provenance. It is an Ex: E.E. Clain-Stefanelli.

Excellent example 4to2! You don't see many as nice as yours. My fairly beat up example of the type. Little overall wear but some serious damage from a chisel test cut likely made by Iberians who essentially treated these as bullion:

yep, i got educated on those types after i failed to buy one because i didn't know about the "skinny" elephant. they'd most likely had never seen an elephant so that was their rendition of one. i like yours and those types.

    Wow, that's a beauty!

Are there any theories about the two distinct styles of elephants? Different mint workshops, presumably?

I'm not too embarrassed either because of my age and an acceptable specimen ;)

Sorry, I have been the passenger in a car for the last 5 hrs. It was hard to read this thread. I got the coin from Ritter. I have purchased from them a few times over the last 12 years.

I saw it last night as a newly listed and I negotiated a price. I look forward to receiving it. Hopefully the surfaces look better than the photo in the OP. But even if not, for the price, style and centering, I am very happy. It's been a decade of looking, I had to pull the trigger.

I think I am out of bullets for awhile.

Wonderful denarius, excellent centering and details. While years ago, not portrait JC's were looked down upon, today in this quality, they're pretty expensive.

When this is one of the couple, you should not be allowed to say "I only have"

I gave up on portrait types...$$$$$........
