I recently complained that I'd never found acceptable Julius Caesars at acceptable prices. Today I found three at a coin fair, so I grabbed the opportunity. They were new acquisitions from two different dealers I've bought from before, not yet put out. I think I got them for about wholesale prices, certainly less than even the hammer prices I've seens at recent auctions. None is brilliant and one is poor, though it looks better in hand. The flan on the elephant is, well elephantine. I don't actually mind these in weaker condition, because they're not the most artistic coins, and prices are already inflated because, well, Julius Caesar. I like mixing grades in my collection. I try to pick and choose when to pay the premium, and I've got some really high-grade Republicans. I quite like these, but grateful for other views. Be brutal!
ALL in all, they are wonderful examples and I'd eagerly welcome any or all of them to my collection----especially for the cost you mentioned. Huge Congrats!!!
You won't hear any complaints from me either. Recently posted my purchases of these denarii in a thread, not so long ago. Congrats.
I don't know much of anything about these,(besides being expensive, and desirable) but I think they have plenty of detail. Even the elephant. Congrats on your scores.
I'm trying not to be crazy jealous about that Aeneas reverse. I am in the market for one of those. I really need to work on this whole "happiness for others" thing.
Those are lovely coins and it sounds like you got a great deal on them! I'd be happy to own any of them.
Very nice score! Fortunately, you were there and could take advantage of the opportunity when it arose. John
My favorite of the three (I'll be in the minority) is the Venus with Aeneas reverse. JULIUS CAESAR AR Denarius OBVERSE: Diademed head of Venus right. REVERSE: CAESAR - Aeneas advancing left, carrying Anchises and palladium Carthage 47 to 46 BC 4.0g, 17mm CRI 55, Sydenham 1013, RRC 458/1, S 1402
Fantastic coins, well done! NUTHIN to be brutal about in my book. These are fantastic placemarkers in History! I would had done exactly the same: scoop up all these great examples for a good price. If you had walked away, you would had deep regrets! Well done @Nerva !
Coins are like busses - you wait and wait and then a pack comes along. Growing up we always thought the busses were just scared to be out by themselves.
@Nerva No mistakes there at all. I wold gladly welcome those into my collection. Excellent acquisitions. I love all of them.
All 3 are nice coins in my book. To me the elephant has especially good eye appeal even with the bit of strike weakness. I like the big flan.
