Isn't this one here one that's been the subject of discussions due to some fakes out there resembling that coin? I could have sworn some here have questioned the coin. I wouldn't dare to comment as to whether it is fake or not, frankly. I will say it's always looked real to me and if I had seen that coin somewhere else I probably would have assumed it was genuine.
Indeed, nice coin, and interesting photo technique, but it threw me off for a moment. At first I thought the coin was struck on some kind of odd, hexagonal flan, until I realized it was sitting atop the head of a bolt (?)
I will say that's a neat way to photograph a coin. Would be a bit better if you used a bolt whose head was a little smaller, so it didn't stick out beneath the coin. I also wonder what it would look like if the background were painted flat black? Do I remember reading something about a similar technique on one of @dougsmit's pages? Nice photo. I'll have to set up the camera I bought last year and have almost never used. For me, coin photography is still not fun - it's a chore. I hope to get past that eventually.
Ok, so I found the thread. Mat said OP coin was a fake, but the issue was never really resolved. I knew I remembered some controversy with the coin. Good to know I'm not going crazy. Frankly I think the coin is real. But still, good to know I did not misremember what happened. https://www.cointalk.com/threads/r-i-p-trajan.267183/
Interesting. You have a good memory. FWIW, the link that Mat provided to that FORVM fake report just led me to the login page, and when I logged in, I was on the main page of their boards, not on any page of the fake reports forum. Edit- OK, never mind. It took a couple of tries, but I saw Mat's link, finally. But the coin in it looks totally different to me. No flan crack, for one thing?
The link may be out of date due to the time that has elapsed. Maybe @Mat can come back in here and explain what he saw. I still believe OP coin is real, but Im always willing to be proven wrong and learning new lessons to avoid getting burned by a fake in the future.
@lordmarcovan I finally saw the pic too, and I have to say they don't look like matches to me. The fake looks like a bad cast job of another coin of the same type (but different dies), and the OP one looks even more real now that I've seen the fake one again. I'm still willing to be proven wrong, but I'm about 98% to 99% convinced that @ro1974 's coin is the real deal.
