Hey guys. I found this coin in a dime roll and I'm not sure if it is real or not. I have a hunch that it is fake but I wanted to ask the experts first. What do you guys think? Real or fake? My thanks go out to @lordmarcovan for recommending I start this thread.
Yeah, he's pretty cool. Extremely limited knowledge will not prevent me from expressing my point of view which is probably fake. Thank you
My gut reaction is fake, but I'm not a specialist in medieval so I could very well be wrong. I'm tagging @FitzNigel as he specializes in medieval and can give a more definitive opinion.
As with others, it looks fake - like the kind of reproduction coin found in a museum shop. The obverse in particular looks suspect, but I couldn't say for certain from the picture. Do you have a weight for the coin? I'll admit to not being an expert on the Anglo-Saxon issues, but I could check a few books I have.
Well, if it is real, it is actually a Hibernian-Norse issue (Vikings in Ireland), I think of Sihtric III. I have my doubts though, as these are rare and something about the fabric just does not look right from the photo...
Buy a scale. They're about $10 for a good one. I can't straighten out my neck now. I got a kink in it looking at that coin.
Looks fake to me. If it were real it would be a penny of Athelred II from about 990-1015 AD. Here is a real example.
In my opinion it could be genuine, it actually looks realer to me than alde's examples. The texture due to being struck on very thin planchets and the general wear have a fairly typical look. I'm not saying it is right, but I'd not be too quick to dismiss it as wrong without having it in hand.
It's a Hibernian-Norse imitation of Aethelred II. Whether it is a genuine imitation or not, I don't know, but it doesn't look quite right... best I could say is look at some genuine medieval coins in hand and see how they compare.
I agree that it should not be dismissed without having it in hand but I assure you mine is quite real. The OP coin is in my opinion at least not an official issue but could be a contemporary forgery.
